Mary Walker Jobe (b. May 20, 1897 - d. Dec. 5 1984)
Born and raised in a family of eleven children in Mebane, NC, Mary Walker was hired by Roses Store in 1932. In 1940 she was named manager of the store on Center St. in downtown Mebane and stayed in that position until she retired in 1973. Mary was known for hiring high schoolers as well as locals who made the store their life time career. Mary was a kind and gentle woman who always thought of others before herself. She often helped those in need -- no matter what it was-- money, Christmas presents, back-to-school-supplies, and clothing, or other pressing needs-- and did so anonymously and with no fanfare. She never married and had no children of her own, but many of Mebane's children benefitted from her generosity throughout her working career. She was a trailblazer in retail as a woman manager and as the first to own a television in her Third Street neighborhood. She was a great supporter of the Mebane United Methodist Church-- where she attended throughout her life. She is remembered as a wonderful woman who was a great role model for women of her time.
