Medford Historical Society & Museum

Medford Historical Society & Museum Join us in building a shared sense of Medford’s history and rich diversity. The MHS was organized in 1896 by ciitizens from the city of Medford, Massachusetts.

The mission of MHSM is to collect, preserve, and promote an inclusive understanding of Medford’s history, offering educational lectures and programs to the general public. Their purpose was to collect and preserve the history of this historic city, to correct the myths that had grown up over the years, to build a historical library, to collect the artifacts of local history, and to celebrate historical anniversaries.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company published a series of maps that continue to offer valuable information about buildings in the towns and cities of the United States. MHSM has an original edition from the year 1910, with additions and corrections dating to 1934. You can spot our building in this image! Digitized versions are also available through the Library of Congress website: https://www.loc.gov/collections/sanborn-maps/?searchType=advanced?CITY=Medford&stateID=23
