QUERY : This pair of patinated bronze candlesticks by George and William Bullock, c1810, appeared at auction in
the north of England in 2023.

They would originally have been attached by screws to the backs of a pair of bronze
sphinxes on marble bases, as the pair in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (also depicted here).

The owner of these candlesticks would love to find the sphinxes and reunite them.

Where have they gone on their travels?

RARE ANTIQUE FINELY WOVEN BIDJAR SOUMAK (FLATWEAVE) TRIBAL RUG, PERSIA C1900

4’10” X 3’6”

A rare and fine rug, and of excellent quality and fine weave (flatweave), original long kelim endings; wool warp and weft, woven with horizontal alternating wide bands of ‘cruciform’ calyx medallions, and narrow bands of flower calyxes (of ‘crab form’), divided by smaller border bands Bijar (Bidjar) rugs are well known for their superb craftsmanship and durability. Bijar Soumack rugs are quite rare. This example is quite worthy of wall display.

Those from the 20th century are on a cotton foundation, as opposed to this wool foundation.
The ‘cruciform’ motif is often used on Shashavan soumak flatweaves.
