This project involved four little girls, one hidden beagle butt, two decades of friendship, and approximately 36 hours of painting.
I’ve known Anna since I met my husband. She was his childhood friend, and then our time at law school overlapped. Over time our lives became intertwined in the way the best friendships do. Careers changed. Kids arrived. Life got busier.
And for the last two years, she has been asking me to paint their bathroom.
Not a wall, but the entire bathroom.
About 25 horizontal feet feet of walls wrapped in wildflowers, butterflies, and meadow grasses.
I’ll admit, the hardest part wasn’t the painting - it was sending a quote to a friend. Fellow small business owners know exactly what I’m talking about. Thankfully, she didn’t hesitate for a second, and what followed was one of the most joyful commissions I’ve ever taken on.
After planning, packing, traveling, painting, and cleanup, I spent roughly 36 hours bringing this little English meadow to life.
It is part “It’s A Small World,” part “Secret Garden,” and part Monet inspired.
Each of our four daughters painted her own butterfly, who now lives on the walls forever.
And hidden among the grasses is a tiny tribute to the family’s beloved naughty beagle, Hunter: a mischievous little tail and b***y disappearing into the meadow. 🐾
Those details won’t mean much to anyone else.
But they’ll mean everything to this family.
Years from now, I hope they’ll walk into this room and remember not just the mural, but the season of life when four little girls painted butterflies together, friends gathered for a weekend, and a bathroom became part of the family’s story.
That’s my favorite kind of art. ✨ Art that comes from memories and is given from the heart.
