Applications are now open for our inaugural Moving Artist Residency hosted in collaboration with Mendocino Dance Project! We are pleased to announce this opportunity is fully funded — housing, travel, and food will be covered.

Residency Dates | July 1- Aug 2
Submission deadline | April 26th

The Moving Artist summer residency is built for people who work with/within the body through performance, dance, ritual, and moving/alchemizing one thing into another — for those interested in embodying and working with the timescapes, legacies, ruptures, and knowledge of the present moment. This residency also holds a unique opportunity to take creative work off the ground and into the towering redwood trees on the Mendocino Coast.

For a week of the month-long residency, artists will have the opportunity to participate in a week-long workshop with the Mendocino Dance Project. During this time, artists will take their work off the ground and into the towering redwood trees, exploring vertical dance as a meeting point between body, gravity, and landscape. Through research, improvisation, and collaboration, artists will investigate movement suspended in space, reimagining dance beyond the horizontal plane and engaging the redwoods as both partner and stage. These rare and unique trees are the tallest trees in the world, echoing history, teaching resiliency, and giving us the opportunity to listen to our own bodies and to the land.

To all the Indigenous artists, BIPOC artists, LGBTQIA and two-spirit artists, neurodiverse artists, artists on the margins: we especially invite you to apply. We especially welcome those whose work engages justice, land, lineage, ecology, body, resistance, healing, or collective memory—but your work doesn’t need to fit neatly into any one box. If you’re called to this place and moment, we want to hear from you.

“Between sun-split skin and biting my nails, rubbing my fingertips against the hand of the one I love, I embrace the perspective of death. In turn, I become aware of the underworld that teems beneath me.”
—Worm Girl

From the mouths of worms is an ongoing project that investigates decomposition as an essential element of fathoming our own subconscious descents. The vitality of any system depends not only on purity but on its capacity to transform waste. The worm, a hidden figure with the capacity to catalyze total transformation, traverses this realm as a living symbol of psyche while acting as a channel into the subconscious itself. It is a messenger, an accomplice, a friend, a foe—a creature of the underworld that transmutes, paves, and metabolizes the cry for regeneration. The psyche and the soil are bound by the same principle: renewal through decomposition.

Kaile Teramoto ( ) is a visual artist, researcher, and storyteller based in Northern California. Her work centers around examining decomposition and how it relates to the human experience. She often explores these themes through the lens of “Worm Girl”—a fictitious character who fearlessly braves the underworld by virtue of finding new meaning.

With the price of precious metals these days, every little piece truly counts. Recycling and reusing your scrap is more important — and more empowering — than ever.

In this hands-on workshop, we will begin by exploring the alloying process: how it works and why it matters. Each alloy has its own unique characteristics, carefully formulated for specific purposes and uses. Understanding these differences gives you greater control over your materials and your designs.
Once we’ve covered the fundamentals, we’ll move into preparing your scrap and/or purchased metal for casting into ingots. From there, you’ll transform those ingots into sheet or wire stock in a range of shapes and gauges — creating exactly what you need for your work.

Not only can this process significantly reduce your material costs, it gives you independence in the studio. Imagine needing a 2” piece of 20-gauge round wire to complete a piece — and confidently making it yourself when all you have on hand is 8-gauge square. These are skills that expand both your resourcefulness and your creative possibilities.

About the Instructor: NANCY GARDNER has been fabricating fine art jewelry in silver and gold for over 35 years. She received her BA in metal smithing from Buffalo State College during which she spent a year of independent study at SACI – Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy. In 1983 she attended AR•CO, the first independent art school in Lisbon, Portugal, where she finalized her degree and completed a Master Metal Smithing certification. For the two years 2 following graduation she was a metal arts instructor at AR•CO in Lisbon. During her years in Europe, Nancy learned old world techniques from master crafts people and fell in love with the art of metalsmithing.

In 2001 Nancy opened Mendocino Jewelry Studio, Main Street in Mendocino, where she continues to exhibit her original, hand fabricated jewelry along with 12 other prominent local jewelers.

The Greenhouse residency offers artists fertile ground to intuit, research, test, dance, cook, write, forage, film, paint, sculpt, breathe and dig deep into our present moment.

In times of fracture, it’s as important as ever to create spaces that act as safe havens, where art is more then merely an act of creation, it’s the meals shared, the conversations sparked, the collaboration that sustains both artists and community.

Let’s keep dreaming improbable dreams-and build them-together.

Please join us this Saturday 6pm for a film screening and conversation with

‘Mushrooms are now widely used as a source for natural dyes. Miriam Rice, an artist from Mendocino, California wrote the first book on using mushrooms as a source of natural dyes in the 1970’s called “Let’s Try Mushrooms for Color.” This groundbreaking dye book was illustrated by artist and friend, Dorothy Beebee. Here, Dorothy gives a behind the scenes look into one slice of the early history of mushroom dyes, the expansion of their work into two additional books, and her thoughts on the future of mushroom dyes.’

Heavy Lifting Listening Tour
Film Showing & Discussion

Felicia Rice and Ukiah poet, Theresa Whitehill, will host an updated event featuring their collaborative project, Heavy Lifting, and the Heavy Lifting Listening Tour, which took place at over 14 venues from early 2023 to late 2024, including 3 events on the Mendocino coast.

Moving beyond the instructional video typical of artists’ books, this experimental film provides an immersive experience of the book itself and its complex compositions of birds, words, shadows, and spoken word. The intent is to evoke the fullness of the artists’ book through a multi-media experience of its many facets.

______________________________________________

Felicia Rice is an artist, letterpress printer, publisher, and educator. In 1977 she set Moving Parts Press in motion. With one foot firmly planted in the 19th century and the other in the 21st, she utilizes letterpress and digital technologies to produce limited edition artists books, prints, and broadsides in collaboration with visual and performing artists, writers, and philosophers.

Theresa Whitehill’s poems tread a tenuous path at the boundaries between personal and collective reckonings with work that portrays alternating grief, tenderness, defiance, and outrage. The result is a suite of poems that deliberately fuses moments of personal and collective experience in a profound act of witnessing. The work acknowledges the almost unbearable pace of relentless crises that have unfolded in recent years—covid, climate change, racial injustice, the threat of totalitarianism, immigration crises—and begins to dwell in what might lie beyond these times.
