Over three days, Larry Kippes, Willie Patocka, Bubbles and Dave Mensch processed this stack of irregular cut slab boards into a very useful stack of vertical lap siding and roofing boards for the Petting Zoo. Thank you, we now have 1/3 of the lumber sawn for the Petting Zoo.

Keep an eye out. We will be operating the sawmill with the Steamer for two more full days this spring to cut the remaining lumber for the Zoo. We will need about 10 guys to keep the lumber flowing through the mill. Our next focus will be approximately 275 pieces of dimensional lumber. We will announce the work day as soon as we get it scheduled.

Following the 2025 show and cleanup, we turned our attention to the log cabin. The logs were in dire need of c***king as most of the old clay c***king had fallen away leaving large gaps between the logs.

Preparation was removing the old mud c***king, cleaning and wire brushing the surfaces, and installing nails and wire plaster mesh between the logs to hold the mortar in place.

A masonry c***king was chosen because of its long-lasting potential. The mix was 3 parts sand, ½ part Type N premix mortar, and ½ part Portland cement. The stiff mortar was pressed into the mesh and nails and troweled smoothly.

A big thank you to Sandy Carter-Solberg, Judy Headley, Sarah Passarelli of Arizona, Dan Huber of Greeley, Colorado for helping Dave and Bubbles get this done in just 4 days. Thanks to Darren Walz for scaffold and the mixer.

The c***king turned out great and should protect the cabin logs for many more years. The cabin has a bit more siding work on the NW corner and then it is on to restoring the next historic building.

We are beginning to c***k the log cabin. The weather forecast looks like we have a little more than a week to get it done before we must shut off the water supply at the show grounds.

The process...
*Remove the old dirt c***king
*Remove any damaged wood
*Brush it clean and vacuum
*Install wire mesh and nails to hold the mortar c***king in place
*Mix and apply the mortar
*Carefully trowel the mortar into the irregular surfaces

Bubbles and I will be on site today, Monday afternoon.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Afternoon and Friday.
We will work until it is done.
We need help to complete the project before cold sets in.

New for 2025 – The Scotland Highland Stitchers Quilt Guild will present a large quilt exhibit in the Holm Building, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of local quilters. Attend this year's show to learn more about the mission of the Guild. We hope to make this an annual tradition for future shows.
