1711 Solomon Goffe House

1711 Solomon Goffe House Open the Second Sunday of the month during the months of May to November from 11am to 4pm. Suggeste All are welcome.

The oldest house in Meriden is the 1711 Solomon Goffe House, built on an old Indian trail. This old trail later became the Old Colony Road, one of the oldest roads in Connecticut, now called North Colony Road, our number is 677. This old house is an English Gambrel roofed house, with all its history and charm of a time long gone. Walk through the gateway, past the picket fence, of wide boards with

a small space-in-between only large enough so a chicken can not pass through. Climb the few steps to the paneled front door, press your thumb on the latch, enter, and you are in a different century, when our 18th century people greet you, in appropriate dress. You will smell wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen fireplace, while apple pie is baking to a golden brown, or perhaps pumpkin pudding is cooking in the oven
The ladies of the house will have their spinning wheels whirling, and the gentlemen busy talking about Colonial times, which they do best. The young men are busy filling the wood-box with wood to keep the fireplace supplied and fetching water, all tasks of the time. In the chambers upstairs, you will find a spinning and weaving room, with many different kinds of fiber, waiting for the spinners fingers to gather up for the spinning wheel. The checker board is always waiting, with its corncob checkers, for anyone who would like to play a game. The door yard herb garden, and the occasional visitor, Norman the miniature goat awaits you. The old house features original paneling, floor boards, fireplaces and inside trim. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, we are a living museum. Open on the first Sunday of the month, April through November, with a different program every month. We invite you to come and visit, and be a part of the 18th century way of life.

On the subject of the battle of Lexington Concord: we forget sometimes that the writers sent through the committee of Safety, news to all the other colonies.
By 20 April Connecticut started mobilizing their malicious to march up to Boston. Colonel Williams of the 11th Regiment. sends out word on the 20th. "that it will be expedient for every man to go who is fit and willing."

For us here in Meriden/Wallingford, we didn’t start mobilizing till about the 23rd.

A letter dated Wethersfield, April 23d, describes the scene there as follows: "We are all in motion here and equipt from the Town yesterday, one hundred young men, who cheerfully offered their service, twenty-days' provision and sixty-four rounds per man. They are all well armed and in high spirits. My brother has gone with them and others of the first property. Our neighboring towns are all arming and moving. Men of the first character shoulder their arms and march off for the field of action. We shall by night have several thousands from this Colony on their march.... We fix on our Standards and Drums the Colony arms, with the motto 'qui transtulit sustinet. round it in letters of gold, which we construe thus: 'God, who transplanted us hither, will support us.'"
There’s even a letter from the gentleman in Wallingford talking about Colonel Wadsworth.

Writing from Wallingford, April 24th, Mr. James Lockwood says: "Col. Wadsworth was over at this place most of yesterday and has ordered twenty men out of each Company of his Regiment, some of which had already set off and others go this morning.... The Country beyond here are all gone." Nor were the Colony officials inactive. Upon receiving "the tragical narrative"

Now for us, we had Captain couches militia, who took the alarm and marched out with about 20 men. What we know is they did not reach Boston. Doing some digging it looks like they might’ve been sent back home due to not being needed. Records show that there were about 4000 men who marched up to Boston, showing their sympathies for the Bostonians stuck under the king thumb.
Happy 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

Below are two pictures. First is of the Connecticut seal during the American Revolution and the other is the letter that was passed from writer to writer reporting about what happened April 19 of 1775.

This was supposed to be posted last month but….

Our last program was Christmas through the century’s. We talked about Christmas during Solomon’s life early 1700s, to Christmas in the 1860s and then Christmas for the Victorians. It was a fun event.
The two trees in the pictures were donated by Kogats Farm here in Meriden. Such great people and really good looking trees.
