Born on this day in 1908 near Natchez, Mississippi, Richard Wright was the author of the short-story collection "Uncle Tom’s Children" and the novels "Native Son" and "Black Boy," among other acclaimed works.

His writing offered powerful accounts of the violence and discrimination faced by African Americans during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Today, his work is considered an important part of America’s historical, sociological, and literary legacy, and believed by many to have helped change race relations in the U.S.

Such a thrill to collaborate with The MAX back in August. So many amazing friends came out from the Meridian area to make art, share stories, and be in community. The staff of The MAX were so kind and supportive all day long ~ a truly amazing family. Special thanks to Curator of Changing Exhibitions + Programs Christina McField who was the center point shepherding this full day of programming, Elizabeth Williams for her support in the studios and for the reception, and Aaron Windham for helping to document the conversations. We're excited to announce the start of an indoor mural project by artist Reshonda Perryman, whose three-part installation will bookend the entrance and exit of our permanent exhibits upstairs.

NightMarket returns to The MAX in two weeks!

Enjoy food trucks and live music from Conner Burch, Cody Dunaway, and Crawford Stevens while you shop fresh produce, handmade goods, and unique finds from local vendors.

Explore The MAX for free before checking out other events happening downtown, including Third Thursdays at Dumont Plaza, Canvases for Cancer at the MSU Riley Center, and East MS Gives, an annual day of giving throughout Meridian.

We're mourning the loss of Cassandra Wilson, who passed away today in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, at age 70.

An acclaimed jazz singer, songwriter, and producer, Wilson was once recognized by TIME magazine as “America’s best singer.” She received many awards and honors over the course of her career, including two Grammys, the Mississippi Governor’s Award for Artistic Excellence in Music, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship, and a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail.

Mississippi was always a part of Wilson, who recorded her album "Belly of the Sun" in a converted boxcar and train station in Clarksdale. She once reflected to The New York Times, “There’s a color, cadence, timbre, and tone in Mississippi that contains all our memories, dreams, fears, and hopes.”

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and fans.

We were excited to welcome students from Northeast Lauderdale Middle School and Northeast Lauderdale High School yesterday through a new promotion with the Mississippi Power Foundation.

Schools across Mississippi Power’s service area can bring their students to The MAX for free during the 2026-27 school year, giving them a chance to explore Mississippi’s creative legacy and discover their own creativity.

Ready to plan a field trip for your students? Visit msarts.org/learn to get started. Schools traveling from outside Lauderdale County can also ask about travel reimbursement, thanks to Yates Construction.
