Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has entered the 2026 Georgia gubernatorial race as the strongest Democratic candidate the state has seen in a generation, polling ahead of her Republican opponent and energizing a party that is ready to make history.

Bottoms dominated the Democratic primary in May, unifying her party quickly while Republicans spent weeks in a brutal, expensive runoff. That head start matters. While the GOP was burning money and goodwill tearing each other apart, Bottoms was already building a general election coalition.

Early polling is striking. A survey from Concord Public Opinion Partners found Bottoms leading Republican Rick Jackson by 15 points. Prediction markets give her better than a 50 percent chance of winning, and she is outperforming where Stacey Abrams stood at this same point in 2020.

Her opponent, Jackson, is a wealthy healthcare executive who self-funded his way through a messy primary. He has money, but he lacks the governing experience, the political network, and the credibility that Bottoms brings to this race. As Atlanta's mayor and a prominent national Democratic voice, she has a record to run on and a story voters can believe in.

The political environment is working in her favor too. Trump's approval rating in Georgia sits at just 41 percent, with a net approval of negative 20 points. Suburban voters and independents, the exact coalition that flipped Georgia blue in 2020, are energized and paying attention.

Georgia hasn't elected a Democratic governor since 2002. Bottoms has a real shot at ending that streak, and the conditions have never been better.
