It is with deep sorrow that the City of Miami mourns the loss of a legendary figure and advocate for civil rights and social justice. Dr. Enid Pinkney passed away early on Thursday, July 18, 2024. During her last moments with family and loved ones, Dr. Pinkney expressed her wish for everyone to care for the Historic Hampton House, the iconic museum she fought to establish, which continues to thrive in Miami. Despite her small stature, she had a profound impact on driving change and advancing justice, equality, and growth in the communities of greater Miami.

Our hearts here at the Historic Hampton House are with our Founder and her family as she finds peace. Details of arrangements are still pending, and we will share updates as they become available.

Despite his tragically short political career, Harvey Milk made history as the first openly gay elected official in the United States. He paved the way for the likes of Pete Buttigieg, Richard Grenell, and Roberta Achtenberg when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. His hard work in fighting discrimination led to the defeat of the Briggs Initiative which sought to ban gay teachers in California.
