Opening Reception this Tuesday, October 15th, from 6-9pm | Brazilian artist Leandro Spett and his exhibition “Walk A Mile in My Shoes”
For his inaugural solo with the Gallery in Miami, Spett’s exploration of watercolor, gouache, ink, acrylic, spray paint and markers are used not only to create an aesthetic but also to open a dialogue : - A hanging shoe is not just a shoe!
“Have you ever seen someone tossing a shoe on a wire? Despite the thousands of sneakers hanging everywhere, I’ve never seen anyone tossing them but I’ve always wondered what it meant. There are many theories or urban legends that seek to explain the phenomenon of shoes hanging from high voltage lines around the world. Nothing too mysterious, but seemingly everywhere, big or small cities, there is always a sneaker on the line waiting to be rescued… or not.
Some say it’s a demarcation of gang territory, others say it’s a drug spot, pranks and so on. But what interests me in this recurring scenario is the rescued nostalgia: that fraction of a moment that connects me with events distant in time and that even after decades becomes a bridge of perception between escape and today’s reality.
As doubt permeates our lives, sometimes we find ourselves alone and dangling with the wind while the world passes by around us and our questions remain suspended and unanswered. An avalanche of conflicts gets formed and friction creates both noise and harmony. In the search to resolve this small chaos, I rescue the innocence and lightness of simple shoes cramped on a wire, which in themselves do not answer my questions and uncertainties but provoke me to understand others and their desires. So, would you Walk A Mile In My Shoes?”
