Join Artist‑in‑Residence Andrea Clement for a hands‑on encaustic demo and workshop exploring this ancient art form, which involves layering molten beeswax onto a panel and incorporating pigments, paint, and lightweight materials to create richly textured, luminous works of art. The two hour demo and workshop begins with an introduction to Andrea’s encaustic practice followed by a demonstration of essential techniques, including building and fusing layers, adding texture, incising lines and shapes, embedding papers, and scraping back to reveal hidden details within your piece. Participants will then experiment with these methods to create their own encaustic artworks using provided materials and equipment. Designed for both beginners and experienced artists, this demo and workshop encourages a playful and exploratory approach to encaustic painting. No prior painting or encaustic experience is required, and all materials are included.

It is with deep sadness that we at Deering Estate mourn the passing of Evelyn Politzer, a beloved artist, community builder, and gentle force of nature whose work touched everyone who encountered it.

Evelyn participated in our Deering Contemporary 2026: Here We Gather… All We Need, We Already Have, an exhibition that could not have been more perfectly suited to her spirit. Curated by Dainy Tapia, the show celebrated community, ecology, and the act of gathering. Evelyn embodied all of these things.

Her piece Air Hug, presented on our grounds, reminded us that connection transcends distance, that care can be woven into form, and that art, like a hug, has the power to hold us.

Evelyn described her practice as "conveying nature's plea for interconnectedness through yarn, thread and fabric," working from small tapestries to monumental sculptural forms. A 2020 recipient of the Ellies Creator Award by Oolite Arts, she also co-founded FAMA, Fiber Artists Miami Association, with the mission to educate and advance contemporary fiber arts, a collective that grew to over 300 members.

Her practice had deep roots in her native Uruguay, where wool and natural fibers are woven into the livelihood of communities, especially women, and that same sense of belonging she carried with her everywhere she went.

The Deering Estate was honored to be part of her journey. Her threads remain woven into this place.

Deering Estate is proud to recommend the exhibition "Absences and Presences: Charles Deering’s Artists in the Banc Sabadell Art Collection" at our sibling institution in Sitges. The Maricel Museum revives the memory of the Charles Deering Collection, returning significant works of Catalan art to their original space.

Twenty-six works from the Banco Sabadell Art Collection symbolically reconstruct the legacy of Catalan and Spanish artists from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, once part of the Deering Collection, alongside 17 historical photographs of the Maricel complex.

Artists such as Rusiñol, Casas, Mir, Anglada-Camarasa, Sunyer, Meifrén, Mas i Fondevila, Roig i Soler, Junyent, Andreu, Nogués, de Regoyos, Sert, de Zubiaurre, Durancamps, and Mercadé are displayed in this exhibition that spans luminist landscapes, portraiture, sculpture, and works on paper. Four works include audio description, making this the Sitges Museums' third accessibility-focused exhibition. On view until October 25, 2026.

Join us for an Artist Talk for Stratum: a Layered Perspective of South Florida with Andrea Clement on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater.

Stratum: a Layered Perspective of South Florida exhibits Deering Estate’s 2025-2026 Artist-in-Residence Andrea Clement’s encaustic paintings, which capture the complexities of South Florida’s unique geological and hydrological landscape. Andrea Clement is a longtime practitioner of encaustic art, using heated beeswax, pigments, and damar resin to create vibrant, abstract paintings. Her residency has been spent exploring the earth’s physical structure, its history, and the processes which actuate its evolution. The encaustic paintings examine geological forces through the passage of time with hydrology: the movement, quantity and management of water on earth. Clement draws from observation of Deering Estate’s waterfront view of Biscayne Bay and current restoration projects, such as the Cutler Slough Restoration Project and Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. The paintings involve Clement’s interest in and observation of geology: the physical structure, substances, and processes that act on the earth. She embodies geologic movements through abstract representations of oolite, fossils, erosion, infiltration, evapotranspiration, plate tectonics, geologic time, sedimentation. Through a process of layering, refining and carving pigmented beeswax, Clement creates colorful, heavily textured paintings that vivify the relationship between South Florida’s water and oolite sediments. At the center of the depicted geological processes, as it manifests in Clement’s work, is stratum: to layer. Just as encaustic painting begets the layering beeswax and resin, South Florida is composed of intricate layers which host its history and connect its inhabitants to the passage of time.
