AI is not the artist. AI is a tool.

Throughout history, artists have embraced new technologies—from the camera and printing press to digital drawing tablets, photography, video, and 3D software. Artificial Intelligence is simply the latest tool available to creators.

A brush does not make a painting. A camera does not create a photograph. Software does not invent an idea. The artist remains the source of the vision, the concept, the emotion, and the intention behind the work.

AI can help artists explore possibilities faster, develop concepts, experiment with new aesthetics, and expand creative boundaries. But technology alone cannot replace imagination, experience, critical thinking, or artistic voice.

Rather than fearing new tools, we should focus on how they can be used responsibly, ethically, and creatively to enrich artistic practice and open new opportunities for expression.

Innovation has always been part of art. The conversation is not about replacing artists—it is about empowering artists with new ways to create.

Antonio Pichillá Quiacaín is one of the most internationally recognized contemporary artists from Guatemala. Born in 1982 in San Pedro La Laguna, near Lake Atitlán, he belongs to the Tz’utujil Maya community and is known for blending Indigenous traditions with contemporary art practices.
