Paper discoloration is generally caused by acid.
As paper ages it often becomes yellowed or grayed. Sometimes this a result of exposure to light..but even a print which is carefully stored in the best conditions can appear a different color from when it was new.
These pictures were taken during the process of another washing job done this time to a Carlos Cruz Diez serigraphy. No harsh chemicals or bleach were used. @ D&D Art
