JACQUES FAIFER (1923-2010)
In 1931, eight years old Jacques Faifer entered a drawing contest held by a department store in Montmartre and won first prize. It gave the 8 year old the incentive to continue drawing on every sheet of paper he could find. At 12, he won first prize at a Beach contest in Houlgate, and received his first box of oil paints. For the 12 years old, it was love at first sight,
a feeling that he would cherish until his death, expressing his passion on canvass. To feed this love he spent his life visiting all the great Museums in Paris, and collecting art objects, antique books and pictures where he found inspiration. At the beginning of War World II, he hid in a monastery in the South of France where he learned to sculpt. His art talent was also useful when he joined the French Resistance, using the name “JUDEX”, and forging numerous false ID papers for the resistance. His talent was helpful to help many Jewish people escape occupied France. After the war, he returned to Paris and continued his art work, becoming known to the antique store dealers in “LES PUCES” (The Clignancourt “Flea Market”). Jacques Faifer’s favorite picaresque scenes are the clowns, the circus, the carnival, “Les Puces” street scenes, and erotic nudes. The Artist leaves a remarkable body of work, over 160 oil paintings on canvass. Even though he remained outside the artistic scene, he never lost touch with some of his well-known artistic friends such as painters Alain Bonnefoit, Henri Lantier, Siniecky, singer Monique Morelli, poets Aragon, Leo Ferre to name a few…
