Happy National Dinosaur Day! 🦖

From paleontology and geology to biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and even climate science, dinosaurs are often the gateway to exploring how our world works. 🧪

Today, we’re celebrating the creatures that have inspired generations of scientists to dig deeper, ask bigger questions, and discover more about the world around us.

Want to dig deeper? Join a Frost Science Digging Expedition and explore active fossil sites alongside Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology Dr. Cary Woodruff for a behind-the-scenes look at real-world paleontology.

A rare Blue Moon is rising tonight 🌕

Reaching peak illumination at 4:45 a.m., tonight’s full Moon is also a micromoon, meaning it sits near its farthest point from Earth and may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual.

And no, it won’t actually be blue. The term “Blue Moon” refers to the rare occurrence of a second full Moon within a single calendar month. Since the Moon’s cycle lasts about 29.5 days, this only happens every two to three years.

Adding to the spectacle, the Moon will appear near Antares, a bright red supergiant star often called the “heart of the scorpion.”

Are you planning on catching it tonight? 🌙

Alligators have been perfecting survival for millions of years, and their instincts are unlike anything else 🐊

This behavior, called lithophagy, involves ingesting stones known as gastroliths. Scientists believe these “stomach stones” may help with digestion and buoyancy, allowing alligators to stay submerged longer, almost like built-in dive weights. And they’re not alone, gastroliths have been found in crocodiles, some seals and even dinosaurs. 🪨

Happy National Alligator Day!
