Join the battlefield hike hosted by South Mountain State Battlefield on Thursday, September 14 at 12:00 PM to learn more about Turner's and Fox's Gaps.
Early in the morning of September 14, 1862, Confederate General D. H. Hill arrived at the Mountain House in Turner’s Gap. He quickly learned that the Union army was in proximity in larger numbers than expected. Hill then proceeded to reconnoiter both Turner’s and Fox’s Gaps to determine how to best defend the mountain. The battlefield hike will start at Turner’s Gap and follow the trace of the Woods Road as Hill did the morning of the battle and will continue as the guide examines the morning phase of the battle at Fox’s Gap.
The hike will begin at the South Mountain Inn. The hike will cover rough and uneven ground; wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and insect repellent. Program will last about 2.5 hours.
This program is in commemoration of the 161st Anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain.
