Fort Morris Historic Site

Fort Morris Historic Site Fort Morris Historic Site preserves one of Georgia's most important Revolutionary War landmarks. Visitors may borrow binoculars and a field guide to go birding.

Explore the earthworks, museum, and scenic grounds where patriots made their famous stand and declared "Come and Take It!" Located on the scenic Medway River. When the Continental Congress convened in 1776, the delegates recognized the importance of a fort to protect their growing seaport from the British. Soon afterwards, a low bluff on the Medway River at Sunbury was fortified and garrisoned by

200 patriots. When the British demanded the fort’s surrender on November 25th, 1778, the defiant Col. John McIntosh replied, “Come and take it!” The British refused and withdrew back to Florida. Forty-five days later, they returned with a superior force, and on January 9th, 1779, Fort Morris fell after a short but heavy bombardment. Under the name of Fort Defiance, this bulwark was once again used against the British during the War of 1812, and Sunbury's harbor was guarded by armed barges. Today, visitors can stand within the earthwork remains and view scenic Saint Catherines Sound. A museum and film describe the colonial port of Sunbury and the site’s history. Downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, goldfinches, wood storks, painted buntings, great egrets and many other coastal species can be seen. Museum Hours: Friday-Sunday / 9AM-5PM

Fort Morris once again stands guard over Sunbury!

Yesterday marked a major milestone at Fort Morris!

As many of you know, for a few years now we have been working on a project to preserve and protect the earthworks, and in turn, restore the fort to its American Revolutionary War condition.

Yesterday we placed a cannon in one of the original positions overlooking the Medway River and St. Catherine's sound. This is just the latest step in a multi-phase project to conserve the fort and improve the visitor experience.

This project has been in the works for several years and began 3 years ago with the first phase of tree removal. The project is not complete, but we are oh so close! There are still plans for improved interpretive signage, and more guns are on the way!

The view from the fort may now be the best vista in Coastal Georgia. To be able to stand in the footsteps of General McIntosh and visualize what it would have looked like to see British ships in the sound is an amazing feeling!

This project is the result of the hard work of a multitude of people. From Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites - Georgia DNR command staff who secured permissions, permits and funding, to hard working field staff, contractors, management and volunteers that put boots and equipment on the ground. A special thanks goes to Mr. Tom Hand and American Corner for his substantial donations and input with the project. We would not be this far along without Mr. Hand! I also want to thank Dr. Peter Martin, Mr. Phil Odum, and the rest of the Fort Morris Friends Group who have also contributed substantial funding and assistance to the project.

This has been a team effort from the top of the state to the bottom and from beyond!

All this in time to celebrate the upcoming America 250th on July 4th! What better place to celebrate than a place where Colonial Georgian's took a stand against tyranny and fought for Independence right here in our backyard! Even better, admission to our July 4th event will be free to the public thanks to Friends of Fort Morris! So, there is no reason not to come out and enjoy the festivities!

We'll see you there!

Coming Soon to Fort Morris!

Georgia is known for excellent historical reenactments, drawing thousands of guests to the historical sites for these immersive experiences every year. Fort Morris State Historic Site is no exception! This is why Friends of Fort Morris was just awarded a Passport Grant to help fund a new garrison carriage to mount a non-firing cannon barrel. Our Friends volunteers will be using this new equipment at special site events and are looking forward to allowing site visitors to participate in demonstrations.

The “Monumental Moments” First Day Hike Through History Challenge program has received the award for Most Innovative Program on a Historic Site. This unique New Year’s Day challenge invited participants to visit five Georgia historic sites in less than 24 hours, experiencing special demonstrations and interpretive programs at each stop.

We are proud Fort Morris was part of this award-winning event, where visitors encountered a colonial soldier camp and learned about the site’s Revolutionary War history.

Congratulations to all the sites and staff who worked together to make this creative program successful!

Some might wonder why we should “look after” those old dirt forts.
Because that's where HEROES stood.

Today in 1778, after Savannah, Georgia, had been captured by the British army, the most professional fighting force on earth, a relative of mine, Lieutenant Francis Tennille of the 2nd Georgia Continentals (***they named the Georgia city of Tennille after his family), was sent with messages from General Howe, who was camped near Ebeneezer, Georgia, to the Sunbury garrison, ordering the commander there, Major Joseph Lane, to destroy the post and evacuate to Augusta, Georgia.

Major Lane sent back a response today, likely with Lieutenant Tennille, informing the General that he did not have a trustworthy guide to take them to Augusta. He and his men decided to stay and defend their fort to the last man.

He wrote, “I can muster about (illegible) for its defense, and I am determined, as there is no possibility of a retreat, at all risk of my life, to defend it to the last...We have provisions sufficient to subsist the garrison for a considerable siege, and spirit, resolution, and fortitude in the breast and heart as every soldier in the garrison to conquer or die in case of a storm.”

Just an old dirt fort…
