Happy birthday to Madeleine Edison Sloane, born May 31, 1888. The only daughter of Thomas and Mina Edison, she spent much of her life keeping her father’s story alive.

In 1915, the Navy named her sponsor of its first submarine powered by an Edison battery. Nearly fifty years later, in 1961, she launched the nuclear submarine USS Thomas A. Edison, which carried her father’s full name. Along the way she raised four sons, who were the inventor’s only grandchildren, and in 1947 she and her mother founded this museum to protect the house where Edison was born, right here in Milan, Ohio.

No one carries the Edison family name today, but his birthplace still stands because of Madeleine. We hope you’ll come see it this summer.

We would like to thank everyone who came out tonight for A Night At The Movies With Mr Edison!! We all have so much fun at these events. A special thank you to Ohio Goes To The Movies!! Come see us tomorrow, Saturday May16th, 12-5 when we will be open for free to the public tours of the Birthplace and the Don Gfell Education Center!

A mother’s belief can echo through history . When young Nancy Edison was told her son Thomas A Edison struggled in school, she refused to let others define his future. She chose encouragement over limitation, curiosity over criticism, and confidence over doubt.

That love became a turning point not only for one boy-but for the world.

The child she nurtured would grow into one of history’s greatest inventors , helping shape modern life through innovations that changed how humanity communicates, works and lives.

Sometimes changing the world begins with one person, who believes in you before anyone else does ❤️

As we head into the summer months, the Blue Star Museum program is now underway!

From now through Labor Day, the Edison Birthplace Museum offers free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
