An Algonquian deer hide drum was purchased by the Institute this winter to be used by campers at this summers Archaeology/Native Culture Camps: Session A July 12-16 and Session B July 19-23 meeting at the Gulf Pond Museum. Campers will hold ancient artifacts from the extensive Gulf Pond Museum collections and spend three days at an actual native American village site learning and doing archaeological work. One camper found three projectiles during the dig at camp 2020. We found an ancient 4-6 thousand year old axe in 2011.
Marine Biology Science/Art Camps A and B will be held at the Tri Beach Neighborhood Center Hillside Ave on the following dates
Marine Bio. Science/Art A June 15-18 9:30-1 P.M.
Marine Bio. Science/Art B June 21-25 9:30-1 P.M.
Campers will learn the 9 marine habitat areas and will study the mollusks, crustaceans, whales, dolphins, porpoise, sea turtles, pinnipeds, sharks and fish. Campers will draw their favorite marine animal on a pine board in each camp, have it cut out, learn to sand, and paint their favorite marine work of art. In Marine Science/Art B campers will collect and mount a Long Island Sound marine mollusk board with Latin and common names. They will learn the carnivores from the herbivores. Marine Bio. Bird Identification Art Camp meets at the Gulf Pond Museum
June 28-July 1 from 9:30-1 P.M. Ages 6 and up with 11 and up called Junior Counselors. Campers will learn the many groups of birds from mounted bird specimens in the Museum, from field guides, charts, and on walks. Campers will choose favorite birds, draw them on a pine board, have them cut out, learn to sand and paint their work of avian art. $160.00
