Union Pacific gas turbine locomotive X-1 in the 1960s. Union Pacific was the only railroad in the United States to own and operate gas turbine locomotives. The entire UP gas turbine locomotive fleet totaled 55 engines. Although tested on the Salt Lake City to Los Angeles run, their tremendous noise quickly made them unpopular in California. As more efficient diesel engines took over, the massive locomotives eventually fell to the wayside and were retired in 1970.
