We took a few detail shots of this painting because so much of Agnes’ work happens on the surface and gets lost in a full-room photograph: raw canvas, paint that has been applied and partially removed, metallic marks, scratches, transparent washes, heavy dark areas and those small hits of turquoise.

Agnes talks about her process as building, erasing and shaping, and you can literally see all three happening here.

How beautiful is this color palette?

These pieces from Alise Loebelsohn are currently on display at our Summit Gallery. Her paintings are built through layers of Venetian plaster, oil paint, mica and wax, adding and removing material through sanding and burnishing until colors, patterns, figures and unexpected forms begin to emerge.
