This Labor Day weekend, we pay tribute to the men and women who labored and still labor in all different realms. These photographs show the men and women's sections from the Burt Billiard Ball Factory, which operated in Millburn around 1900 near where South Mountain School is now located. The company was billed at the time as "the largest pool ball maker in America." Workers were segregated by gender. Factories were segregated by gender at this time, to ensure propriety. The man in the back of the women's section photo, was a chaperone, entrusted with keeping any men from sneaking in.
