Andalusia, Home of Flannery O'Connor

Andalusia is the historic home of American author Flannery O'Connor from 1951 until her death in 1964

Andalusia served as the home of famed American author Flannery O’Connor from 1951-1964. First settled in 1814, Andalusia was a cotton plantation and farm until it was purchased by Flannery’s uncle Dr. Bernard Cline in 1931. During the O’Connor’s residency, the site contained 14 buildings with over 520 acres of land that was used for dairy and beef farming. Following a diagnosis of Lupus in 1951, O

’Connor moved to Andalusia to live under the care of her mother Regina Cline O’Connor. During the 13 years she lived at Andalusia, she completed the bulk of her literary work, as the farm’s environment influenced the setting of many of her writings. Following her death in 1964, the farm remained in the family until 2003 when it was given to a private foundation for use as a museum. In August 2017, the site was gifted to O’Connor’s alma mater, Georgia College. Today, Andalusia serves as a museum whose mission is to care for, collect, interpret, and exhibit items that illustrate the history of the site during the time which Flannery O’Connor lived on the property (1951-1964). Andalusia is open for public tours and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2019, Andalusia was listed as a "Distinctive Destination" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2022, Andalusia was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service.

Did you know that Flannery O’Connor received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree? In June 1963, O’Connor received the honorary degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Here, she stands in graduation attire beside Smith College President Thomas C. Mendenhall.

It’s a wonderful little glimpse of O’Connor’s life beyond Andalusia — and a reminder that while so much of her writing life was rooted here on the farm, her work carried far beyond Milledgeville.

Congratulations to our graduating student-docents, Chloe Butts and Tatom Curtis! 🎓

Chloe has represented Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion and the Sallie Ellis Davis House, while Tatom has represented Andalusia: Home of Flannery O’Connor. Both have brought their own talents, curiosity, and care to the work of sharing our sites with the public.

As a Theatre major and a Literature major, Chloe and Tatom are wonderful reminders that you do not have to be a history major to be a meaningful steward of history. Good docents are storytellers, listeners, learners, and guides — and both of them have served our museums beautifully.

We are so grateful for the time and energy they have given to the Department of Historic Museums, and we could not be prouder to celebrate them as they graduate. Please join us in thanking Chloe and Tatom and wishing them all the best as they begin this exciting next chapter. We have every confidence they will do wonderful things. 💙💚

Bring a blanket or chair, get settled in, and enjoy the film under the evening sky. Matt Bryant Cheney of Georgia College & State University will introduce the film, and a discussion will follow the screening. We hope to see you tonight!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. John Handley as the new Executive Director of the GCSU Department of Historic Museums.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Handley comes to Georgia College with over 30 years of diverse experience in museums, with a strong background in museum administration, exhibition development, collections, scholarship, and community outreach. Throughout his career, his work has reflected a genuine belief in the role museums can play in connecting people, stories, and place.

Now calling Milledgeville home with his three rescue pups, Mattie, Peanut, and Archibald, Dr. Handley joins our team with a wealth of leadership, perspective, and expertise. We are excited to welcome him and look forward to this new chapter in our shared history.

There’s always a story behind the story. In our Meet the Docent series, we’re introducing the people who help make Andalusia such a meaningful place to visit. Follow along to get to know our docents, discover their favorite pieces of history, and learn why this site matters to them.

Our second student docent feature is Elizabeth Ramsey. We’re grateful for her dedication and for the care she brings to sharing Andalusia with our visitors.

Part catalog, part guidebook, and part farm reference, "MacRae’s Blue Book: America’s Greatest Buying Guide," was a practical tool for everyday rural life. For a working farm like Andalusia, this would have been a useful resource for Regina O’Connor, who managed much of the farm’s day-to-day operation. A reference like this helped connect her to the supplies, services, and information needed to keep the dairy farm running.

Its faded cover, brittle pages, and worn spine reflect years of use, offering a glimpse into the labor behind daily life on the farm. Keep an eye out for the 1943–1944 edition on Regina O’Connor’s desk the next time you tour Andalusia.

Spending the evening gathered at Andalusia Farm to reflect on Flannery’s life and legacy made for a truly special celebration. We’re so thankful to all who came and shared in the occasion with us.

Join us this evening for a special outdoor screening of John Huston’s Wise Blood in celebration of Flannery O’Connor’s birthday.

Set against the backdrop of Andalusia Farm, this Southern Gothic film screening is a fitting way to honor Flannery’s life and legacy. Guests are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs and enjoy light refreshments provided on site. The evening will also include an introduction by Dr. Bruce Gentry and a discussion afterward. We hope to see you there!
