A visit to Villa Louis last fall. This grand Italianate Villa was designed and built c. 1870 by Milwaukee architect E.Townsend Mix. In 1882 the Villa was inherited by Hercules Louis Dousman. A redecorating campaign in Arts & Crafts style was undertaken in the mid-1880s by the English designer Joseph Twyman of the Chicago interior design firm John J. McGrath. Grosvenor Wilton carpets were selected by historic designer Gail Winkler for the parlor, sitting room, and upstairs bedrooms during an extensive restoration in the 1990s. Villa Louis was built on a mound on an island in the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

Join me for Founders Day at Eastfield Village in Nassau, NY, on September 21st. Spend a day roaming around a privately created village of the 1820s with craft demonstrations and much more. During a workshop on early 19th century I will show how period carpet and wallpaper colors responded to lightings technology of the time. This annual event honors the memory of founder Don Carpentier.

Historic Eastfield is a recreated early American village, and home to the Annual Series of Early American Trades and Historic Preservation Workshops.

There are two period documents for slightly different colorways. The bolder green was chosen for Gore Place and Hamilton Grange.
