A visit to Villa Louis last fall. This grand Italianate Villa was designed and built c. 1870 by Milwaukee architect E.Townsend Mix. In 1882 the Villa was inherited by Hercules Louis Dousman. A redecorating campaign in Arts & Crafts style was undertaken in the mid-1880s by the English designer Joseph Twyman of the Chicago interior design firm John J. McGrath. Grosvenor Wilton carpets were selected by historic designer Gail Winkler for the parlor, sitting room, and upstairs bedrooms during an extensive restoration in the 1990s. Villa Louis was built on a mound on an island in the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
