We had a really neat guest at the museum this week-Gloria Davis, who is part of the Spencer family from Milton, came to MHS (our museum is an old church), and told me her great grandfather worked in the button factory here long ago, her grandmother worked in the shirt factory, and her grandfather was a lay minister in this church (thus taking her picture in front of the ministers’ window in the museum). Her great-great grandfather, Miltonian Josiah Bailey, was a cobbler in town-way back in the 1800s. She’s living history and it’s invaluable to hear stories of the past from living memory. We will interview her for our oral history recordings here at the museum. It was nice to meet you, Gloria!

Throw-Back-Thursday time, folks! We have for you today the Douglass and White Shirt and Overall Factory, circa 1909. It was located on Atlantic Ave. near Union St. Successful for many years, the factory employed many young women in Milton. It is featured along with many other photos in our current exhibit on Milton photography, “Milton in Black & White”. Enjoy!

Hi All! Our Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Event is happening next weekend: Mother’s Flowers Tour.
What: Each year we take flowers over to Goshen Cemetery and place them on special Milton Mother’s graves..we usually just do a couple of us from the museum, but we’ve had so many requests to join us, this year we are inviting members or the public to join us! We ask for a donation for the flowers-whatever you think you can give! After we pass out the flowers to a group of graves we pick out, our Director DeeDee will tell you some stories of some of the mothers buried there-some very interesting! It’s a great way for you, mom or the kids to come out and lay flowers and hear a bit of history!
How: RSVP is necessary so we bring enough flowers, and Goshen is small, so we are going to limit this to 20 people. Sign up by emailing DeeDee at [email protected], tell us your name, amount you want to donate, and phone number. We will get you signed up!
Who: Moms we will be covering and honoring: Delaware’s first women to register to vote, A woman who sailed the high seas on a ship, local business owners from days gone by and more!
Other Details: Sat. May 9th from 10-11:30am. We bring the flowers! Meet us at the historical society at 210 Union St. and we will walk over to the cemetery from there. We are excited to kick the year off with Moms! Hope to see you there!

We had a very special guest at our exhibit opening tonight! Patti Carter, great granddaughter of Dr. William E. Douglas (the Milton doctor, who is the photographer of our new exhibit, from so long ago. He took all of the black and white Milton photos in the early 20th century). How wonderful to have his descendent come to view his special photography over 100 years later! Occurrences like this are surprising and extremely special! It was nice to meet you, Patti!
