'Art Against the Odds: Wisconsin Prison Art,' coming June 4-Aug. 6, gives voice and visibility to people held in the state's carceral system.

Milwaukee-area friends, a very special exhibit called "Art Against the Odds: Wisconsin Prison Art" is opening this month with a free public reception!

Reception: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 19
At Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

Over two years ago, Portrait Society Gallery put out a call for artwork from individuals who are incarcerated in Wisconsin. The result is a first-of-its-kind touring exhibition that showcases approximately 60 artists' professionally mounted work in several room-sized installations.

Wisconsin Humanities is proud to support this project with a WH grant and collaborate to share some of the artists' work during the second season of our Human Powered podcast.

Coming out in 2023, Human Powered is talking with people who have been impacted by the justice system and how the arts and humanities offer creative ways to explore the human condition and the larger social issues around imprisonment.

We are so grateful to have the support of the Wisconsin Humanities Council for our upcoming project, Art Against the Odds: Wisconsin Prison Art, opening Jan 2023 at MIAD!!! Wholehearted gratitude.

We have worked for 50 years in every corner of the state to explore what it means to be human, to be part of a democracy, and to strengthen each of our communities.
