Although b**r baron Captain Frederick Pabst died on January 1, 1904, he wasn't buried until months later, once the ground thawed. In the time between his death and burial, Mrs. Pabst hired guards for a total of 169 nights to watch over his body. These watchmen were paid $2 a night (approximately $75 in 2026). As you can see from this 1904 receipt from , this was no small expense.

Do you see the resemblance? 🤔 The Pabsts purchased this painting titled "Mignon" by Henri Gervex (French, 1852-1929) at Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition. They were drawn to the portrait because it resembled their late daughter, Elizabeth. Elizabeth passed away in 1891 at the age of 26. She was survived by a 6-month-old daughter whom the Pabsts later adopted and raised in the Pabst Mansion.
