Indriķis Ģelzis, Gaze Grows Bones, 2026

Indriķis Ģelzis lives and works in Riga, Latvia. He makes metal sculptures that look a little like stock market graphs — rising and falling, full of tension — except he never uses real data. Instead he draws on personal memory, imagination, and experience, then works it into physical form through cutting, welding, and bending steel.

Gaze Grows Bones is built from clusters of steel spheres that suggest eyes — taking everything in, projecting outward. They’re painted grey, black, and red, and their surfaces are made from small rectangular units that look like bandages or patches. The spheres are arranged along a curved vertical spine, as if years of looking — at screens, at each other, at the world — had slowly built up into something solid. Scaffolding-like structures surround the work, and chains connect its parts, suggesting both support and constraint. The work asks a quiet question: does the way we see the world eventually shape us? And who, or what, shapes the way we see?

Flo Kasearu is an artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. Working across video, drawing, painting, installation, and performance, she tends to approach big, serious subjects — national identity, power, the line between public and private life — with humor and a raised eyebrow. Since 2013, she has run the Flo Kasearu House Museum, an ongoing artwork and public institution operating out of her own home.

A towering copper sock rises over the street. It started as something humble — a keeper of warmth, usually found in the quiet intimacy of a home — but at this scale it becomes something else: part watchful neighbor, part guardian, part silent authority. Copper is a material we associate with electrical wiring, heat, and civic monuments. The sock shares that weight, but remains inherently vulnerable. Socks need warmth; they wear out; they’re ordinary. Whether this one is offering protection, generating heat, or just staring is for the street to decide.

Open Kitchen is a Milwaukee collective founded in 2016 by Rudy Medina and Alyx Christensen, in partnership with Alan Medina. Through events, installations, residencies, and seasonal research projects, they use food as a lens on ecology, identity, land, and community, bringing artists, growers, cooks, and neighbors together around shared tables and shared questions.

Fridge Cultures was composed in spring 2026 as a timestamp of the collective’s ephemeral activities. The fridge holds active fermented cultures alongside a social culture of artists working with food and landways: a sourdough mother tended by collective members, a yogurt culture from an artist residency in Istanbul, and a double-cream Colby developed by a local artist and creamery. These ferments sit beside “XCellarator Pickles,” an experimental pickling cooperative preserving the seasonal diversity of Milwaukee gardens. Though seemingly still, the composition is a microcosm of an ecological proposition: that the margins of what we digest can shape culture.

Fridge Cultures is co-presented with the Haggerty Museum of Art, the Lynden Sculpture Garden, and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists. Medina and Christensen are 2025 Nohl Fellows. Since 2020, Open Kitchen has been in residence at Lynden, where they steward a cultural garden and apiary integrating Indigenous environmental knowledge.

Augustas Serapinas’ practice is invested in recomposing public spaces in order to foreground and problematize the assumptions that shape them. By doing so, he uncovers hidden dynamics of social hierarchy, economy and memory inherent to objects that are passed unacknowledged.

Standtune takes its name from a traditional fence style from the island of Gotland, Sweden — a building technique kept alive by a small group of local craftspeople. Historically, standtune structures functioned primarily as boundary and enclosure systems, though they may also have served defensive purposes. For Sculpture Milwaukee, Serapinas explains: “I essentially built the same fence, just with curves.” Made from locally sourced birch, the roughly 40 foot long sculpture no longer divides anything. It asks what we hold onto, what traditions we keep alive, and what we let go.

Yuichi Yokoyama chose to use sequential images of manga because, as he puts it, it lets him “draw time.” His approach — often called “neo-manga” — strips away conventional storytelling and emotion in favor of pure motion, rhythm, and transformation.

This large-scale billboard is his first public installation in the United States. It comes from Neo Manyo (PIE International, 2023), a book in which 22 manga stories reimagine classical Japanese waka poetry through Yokoyama’s visual imagination — drawing from sources including the 8th-century anthology Man’yōshū, one of Japan’s oldest surviving poetry collections. The scene shown here depicts a ship moving through churning water. The bold lettering across the center — ドドド(dododo) — is onomatopoeia for the roar of waves, a sound made visible. The poem accompanying this scene was written by the Buddhist monk Sami Mansei (early 8th century): “How shall I liken this world? It is like a boat that rows away at dawn, leaving no trace behind.”

Originally created in 1974 on the bank of the Tama River in Japan, Law of Immutability places poly bags directly onto existing stones found on site, combining the natural and the manufactured, heaviness and lightness, solidity and vulnerability, in a quiet, open-ended dialogue. This work asks what happens when familiar materials are simply placed together, without transformation, and allowed to be — how relationships between things emerge, how we perceive the world.

Sculpture Milwaukee is pleased to present Power of the Margins, the organization’s tenth annual exhibition of free outdoor public art in the streets of downtown Milwaukee. Now on view, the 2026 exhibition celebrates the vitality of artistic communities working outside the major cultural capitals and the distinct creative strategies they develop as a result.

Evolving out of conversations between Sculpture Milwaukee and a group of international curators and artists, the exhibit brings together seven works in various media by artists from the Baltics, Japan, and Milwaukee.
