Calling all Milwaukee artists! 📣

The Allis is now accepting applications for our next Artist in Residence block. During the residency, artists will have the unique opportunity to find inspiration within the historic home of Charles and Sarah Allis, work in a dedicated studio space 5-10 hours a week, and develop public programs in collaboration with staff. The residency will culminate in a solo exhibition of the artist’s work throughout the museum. Submit your application using the link in our bio! 🎨💫

This month we made a visit to Milwaukee High School of the Arts for an artist talk and shadow puppet activity with as part of our Arts@1801 program. Check out the incredible puppets students created and displayed on overhead projectors!

Arts@1801 is one of our core outreach programs, giving MPS students an introduction to professional artists, galleries, and art museums, with an opportunity to exhibit their work at the Allis.

This program is made possible by our generous sponsor, Bader Philanthropies. With their support, we are able to bring experiences in the arts to MPS school across the city.

Appreciate Urban Milwaukee for capturing more of the story behind this moment.

From transition to ownership—the journey to securing the future of the Charles Allis Art Museum hasn’t been simple, but it’s been worth it.

The purchase is a major step for the nonprofit, which has encountered challenges since county spinoff.

We’re proud to share a truly historic milestone for the Charles Allis Art Museum.

We have officially finalized the acquisition of our historic home at 1801 N. Prospect Avenue, securing the long-term future of this beloved landmark as a space for art, culture, and community in Milwaukee.

This moment didn’t happen overnight. It represents the culmination of an 18-month journey of transition and transformation. During this time, our organization shifted from operating two museums to focusing solely on the Charles Allis Art Museum. We also formally transitioned our name from CAVT Museums, Inc. to better reflect our identity as a standalone institution.

Through this process, we worked to stabilize operations, rebuild programming, and re-engage our community—all while laying the foundation for a more sustainable future.

Now, with ownership of the building secured, we are able to:
• Preserve this historic home for future generations
• Expand exhibitions, programs, and community partnerships
• Unlock new opportunities for funding, philanthropy, and preservation
• Continue growing as a welcoming, community-centered space

Already in 2026, we’ve engaged more than 1,400 visitors, neighbors, and students through exhibitions and programs—and we’re just getting started.

The Charles Allis Art Museum has always been a special part of Milwaukee’s cultural fabric. Today, we’re proud to ensure that its legacy continues—and that its future is even brighter.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. We’re excited for what’s ahead.
