This is from a photograph in an old family album. I don't know who it is, but the uniform is from the Jaeger Platoon. It dates from around the Finnish Civil War in 1918. When Russia underwent the Bolshevik Revolution and Tzarist Russia came to an end, the Russian duchy of Finland declared independence. What ensued was a struggle between the Whites and the Bolsheviks in Finland. The Whites won under Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, a career soldier who had formerly risen to the rank of Lieutenant General in Tzar Nicholas II's army, being prominent at the coronation ceremonies of that ill-fated Tzar.

This is my great grandfather's and grandmother's farm house in Lappajarvi, Finland. Lappajarvi is the only lake in the water-embroidered landscape of Finland to have been created by a meteor. I was in this house in 2000--I don't think it was the same color--but it is no longer standing. I understand it had become unsound after 300 years or more. (Pl.ease, family, correct me if I'm wrong.) I painted this to go on a tee shirt for our Olli Familly Reunion in Minnesota this July.

I saw this summerhouse at Seurasaari (Helsinki) in July. Somewhere, I think it was originally positioned in sight of the sea, so this is my imaginative interpretation. Of course, these girls would probably have been taking tea.

Bear Proof, Oil on Canvas, 14x18
This is the first painting I've done from my recent trip to Finland for the Olli Family Reunion 2023. This food storage hut was designed to keep bears out in Petsamo, Finland, ceded to Russia after WW2. It was moved to the Open-Air Museum on Seurasaari, , an island in Helsinki. Seurasaari is the most beautiful place, with lovely coastal views of the interisland sea and wonderful old buildings situated between granite boulders and tall pines. Lots of history!
