Tucked away in historic Mineral Point, Pendarvis celebrates the restoration and preservation efforts of Robert Neal and Edgar Hellum, who saved a significant part of Wisconsin’s past. Learn more about the first Wisconsin “badgers,” the Cornish who built up Mineral Point, and the two men who saved that history almost 100 years later.

We had the best time on Saturday with Kathleen Ernst, Author at our Cornish Tea! Kathleen discussed her book, Mining for Justice, a Chloe Ellefson Mystery set at Pendarvis Historic Site. Guests enjoyed a Cornish tea -- including saffron cake, mini pasties, and scones -- while hearing from Kathleen about her writing process and the history that inspired her at Pendarvis. A tour and book signing with the author rounded out the afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed a beautiful Saturday afternoon with us!

A huge thanks to all of the Mineral Point Cummins Inc employees who came to Pendarvis this morning to help us get the gardens ready for opening day. Volunteers did a lot of weeding and mulching and transformed a large part of our site that receives all of our visitors. Thanks again!

Yesterday the Pendarvis tour staff kickstarted 2026 tour training by learning how to make pasty at the The Book Kitchen! Richard, assisted by Krista and Nicole, taught us how Bob Neal made pasty in the Pendarvis House kitchen, and how he has continued to make it for his family over the years. We learned the key is using lard in the crust, suet in the filling, and slicing the potatoes thinly. Thanks to Richard and the Book Kitchen for a great afternoon!

Planning a trip to Mineral Point this summer? See us to learn all about Cornish history and then head over to the Book Kitchen for a fun cooking class!

Happy St. Piran's Day!

The national day of Cornwall is celebrated every March 5. St. Piran is both a patron saint of Cornwall and of tin miners. The black field with white cross is the flag of Cornwall and is associated with St. Piran.

Mineral Point has been called one of the most Cornish towns in America.

Today we have Tree Health Management on site to do a survival prune on our historic birch tree. This prune will help maintain the life of the tree by removing dead limbs and reducing weight off the crown to prevent future wind damage. We have been working closely with the DNR wildlife biologists and other professionals to ensure longevity and safety of the tree.

Our birch tree is important to Pendarvis history because it prompted Bob Neal and Edgar Hellum to buy up additional property, eventually saving more historic structures and creating the Pendarvis complex.

Happy birthday to Edgar Gorby Hellum!

Edgar was born on this day in 1906 in Stoughton, Wisconsin. In 1934, he met Robert Neal, and together as business and life partners, they spent the rest of their lives promoting and preserving the history of Mineral Point and Wisconsin. Their biggest endeavor was operating the Pendarvis House restaurant and restoring the surrounding buildings from 1935-1970, which make up Pendarvis Historic Site today.
