6:32 am, The First Promise is a series of large-scale oil paintings by Somali-American, Minneapolis-based painter Mohamed Hersi

Created in the stillness following fajr (dawn prayer), each canvas reflects on patience, mercy, gratitude, trust and remembrance.

Mohamed Hersi’s paintings offer a sanctuary, inviting viewers to sit beside him at dawn, to pause, and to share in the renewal that rises with the light.

Among the many people who gave us this day was Faadumo Xirsi Cabbane, a poet and prominent Somali political activist. She joined the Somali Youth League (SYL) in 1940s Mogadishu but was exiled to Gaalkacayo by Italian authorities in 1947 for her political activities. She later joined the Somali National League (SNL) and, according to legend, would paint “SNL” on public walls with the letter N backwards to rally the masses—only to have colonial officers repaint them the next day. One of her poetic lines was “By God, we are not afraid, for we are used to jail!”
