These three paintings came together at the end of the summer. I was riding high off of a solid summer of swimming in some of the best spots in northern Wisonsin and Minnesota. I lingered in cool, clear lakes in Ely, floated in Lake Superior, cliff jumped with the teenager and his buddies, found a rope swing that dropped you into magical tree canopy covered lagoons, did long swims in Lake Superior, the Chippewa Flowage, Square Lake, and had dreamy pool dates with my 12-year-old siren at the neighboring community pool. The work I showed last spring was all about being alone in and with the water, but as summer came to a close, I was drawn to the community built around water. I saw teenagers testing their limits, I noticed the groups of women in their sunhats floating and laughing, I watched a group of 10-year-olds who create an elaborate improv game where they found increasingly creative ways to pretend to push each other into the pool, and on and on and on. And as I’ve been showing you this work at our neighborhood art crawl and at open studio events at The Toolbox Collective, you all have been sharing your versions of these stories, and it’s about all my heart can take knowing that you all see yourselves in these images. This work is new, but your willingness to share what you see and feel and remember when you stand in front of these paintings tells me I’m headed in the right direction. It tells me where to lean in and what to focus on. Thank you! Now it’s time to get back to work.

November is slipping away, the water temperature is dropping quickly, and my neoprene boots and gloves are outside drying. The crowds are gone from the beaches and the water is clear again. I love watching the seasons change from the water.

This stop-motion experiment was created during my fall residency at the Tofte Lake Center at Norm's Fish Camp. I'll be unpacking the seeds that were nurtured during that magical week for years to come.

I just finished hanging the wall art for the League of Longfellow Artists (LoLa) this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, September 23-24 from 10 am - 4 pm ). It’s been a whirlwind of starting a new job, rushing off to the woods to bask in the changing leaves and sparkling water while spending my days digging deeper into the art making part of my work and then flying back into town to get my act together for the art crawl this weekend. If you are in the Minneapolis metro this weekend I’d love to see you!

We are on day 2 of crap air quality in Minneapolis, and it feels like a post-apocalyptic hellscape out there. Feeling extra glad that I made time for a lovely solo swim Tuesday night before the funk blew in and settled over the city.
Closing my eyes and conjuring the magic of the cool water and a clear head.

I’m slowly adding my newest originals to my website before hanging them on the walls of the Signature Arts Building ( https://www.signaturearts.net ) for the summer (and then in September for the crawl). If you’d like to see any of this recent work in person and live in the Minneapolis metro please reach out and we’ll schedule a time for you to check it out. AND this weekend I’ll be for a pop-up event. I’ll have new card packs, prints, stickers, and a few small originals available.

I’ve struggled to name paintings in the past. It sometimes feels forced or inauthentic and that’s the last things I want associated with my work. BUT this last batch of work the titles came to me, easily and at the perfect moment like the perfect finishing step. This one is called “Recovery”. Swimmers use recovery strokes to keep catch their breath after a sprint or in rough waters (these are some of my favorite moments in the water). It feels like a lovely reminder to find our preferred recovery stroke out of the water too.

Yesterday was frustrating. My email stopped sending and receiving messages at an inopportune time and I spent the day hitting obstacle after obstacle on finishing a series of mixed media resin pieces. My fingers were sore from cutting and repeatedly stabbing myself with the edges of the aluminum tape I use to create a mold around the layered works. Still, I kept plugging along with the same finger-stabbing, unsuccessful technique. As I rushed to finish these pieces (for a show that opens on Thursday night), a little voice in my head reminded me that it’s okay to ask for help and that someone else might be able to help me solve these problems. It sounds so obvious but I’ve worked alone for 12 years and my first response is to struggle way longer than necessary before reaching out for support. Today everything feels more manageable! My neighbor is bringing a table saw home from work to see if we can trim off the finger-stabbing elements on these resin pieces and I put out a call to the brilliant folks who build my website and save my ass from technology woes on the regular. Fellow artists and do-it-yourselfers, it’s a myth that we have to do it all alone. It’s good to be reminded that all success is built on collaboration and co-creation. Grateful to the creative and generous folks in my sphere who make this isolating work a little less isolating.

Surprise! I’ve got a show opening 2 weeks from Thursday! Nothing like a deadline and a little panic to motivate a lady. All those pieces I worked complete in February still need layers of resin and painted edges and signatures and hooks and wires AND why not try to wrap up some of these incomplete pieces sitting around me studio. If you are in the north woods of Wisconsin or looking for a road trip I’d love to see you.
