TOGS Quilt group began in 2008, with the goal of being a group of quilters and friends who wanted to enjoy and improve their quilting skills. They meet monthly to discuss and support each other on projects. Many quilts can take a month, and some more than a year to complete.

Fifty-five wonderful quilts were created for the show at 801 Gallery in the 801 Washington Lofts. Some of the styles of quilts you will see are Round Robin, Row by Row, Medallion, One Block Wonders, Block Exchanges, Farmer’s Wife, a variety of 1800’s reproduction quilts, and "mom’s quilts' made by two sisters as a tribute to their mother.

They are featuring twelve quilts made to support Avivo Village, an indoor community of 100 tiny homes that provides shelter and services to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. The Avivo quilts on the first floor are for sale. All money raised will go entirely to Avivo Village.

Services at Avivo Village are designed with the goal of moving people into permanent housing and taking the next steps toward their well-being. Avivo Village is located at 1251 North Washington in Minneapolis. The TOGS quilt group is one of several quilting groups that make quilts for the residents to offer them comfort and warmth. The quilt is theirs to keep and take with them when they leave the Village. For more information about the Avivo Village, please go to avivomn.org.

801 Gallery is located in the North Loop Neighborhood in Downtown Minneapolis in the 801 Washington Lofts. We have been curating three art shows a year featuring local artists since 2005.

Artists
Mary Johnson

Mary Johnson is a Minnesota sculptor, whose work transforms and reassembles found materials, considering their material histories and narrative potentials. Following a recent injury, she has adapted her sculptural aesthetics to painting, utilizing repurposed industrial foam as both surface and form. By investing time, labor, and personal reflection into the handling of this seemingly disposable material, she re-animates our intimate relationship with the aesthetics, natural and industrial processes, and objecthood of our culture’s cast-offs, honoring the complexities which go hand-in-hand with our consumption.

Mark Hirte

Mark makes compositions to be visually arresting. They are painted to be graphic and dynamic as they are traversed as they need to compete in our flooded visual environment. The subject matter, color, and texture can be the reflection of the floor of a well used paint booth, or the glossy flash of a fluorescent fishing lure, or an ocean pacific tshirt from his childhood, or a direct homage to a western mesa landscape. Or all of it at once.

Ellen Thomson

Ellen Thomson’s paintings draw on memory, intuition, and emotion, unfolding through layered patterns, shifting forms, and recurring imagery. Moving fluidly between the figurative and the landscape, her work resists fixed meaning and instead embraces openness and transformation. This ambiguity invites viewers to bring their own interpretations, creating a dialogue between artist and audience.
