ALLEYWAY ARTS
SCHOOL RELEASE DAY ARTS CLASSES

WED - FRIDAY OCTOBER 19 - 21
MASKMAKING is an activity that has been a part of many traditional cultures for ages, for purposes from hiding one’s identity to calling upon the spirits for healing or to help the crops or the hunt and more. In our modern society as we come upon late October, we think about how to portray ourselves for Halloween. We will make masks that can be worn or hung on the wall as a piece of art. Students can choose between having the plaster bandage formed over their own face or to plaster over a mask form. We then paint and embellish with feathers, beads, etc.
PAINTING with acrylic paint. The surface size and subject depends on student’s interest and on how much time we have together to develop imagery.
CRAFTS can be a choice of beadwork, weaving, string and yarnwork, object making/embellishing and more

THURS. - FRIDAY NOVEMBER 3 - 4
MOSAIC is a fun project to make to keep or give as a gift. Students can choose between a variety of surfaces to mosaic upon. We have lots of materials to use, tiles of many colors, broken dishes, colored glass, etc. We then finish by grouting.
PRINTMAKING to make holiday cards or framable art. Roll out colorful inks to print potatoes, styrofoam or linoleum-cut imagery onto paper. Super fun!

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 23
BEGINNING KNITTING
Learn knitting basics, and start a scarf. You can bring your own yarn and large size knitting needles ( size 13 to 15) or I can provide them for a $10 material fee. It’s a good time to start a knitting project. You can work on it over the Thanksgiving weekend and after. Good skill to have.

FRIDAY - SAT NOVEMBER 25 - 266
GIFTMAKING
We will be busy as elves, thinking about people we want to give to and making high quality gifts using a variety of materials, while developing art skills. I’m keeping it vague, because there might be a surprise for you.

MONDAY - FRIDAY DEC. 19 - 23
DRAWING AND PAINTING is about allowing each student to follow their own creative direction, with guidance and direction in drawing skills, imagery development and painting techniques using with acrylic paint on canvas.
GIFTMAKING We will be busy as elves, thinking about people we want to give to and making high quality gifts using a variety of materials, while developing art skills. I’m keeping it vague, because there might be a surprise for you.

MONDAY – FRIDAY DEC. 26 - 30
PATTERNS AND DESIGN
With Beadwork, Weaving and Painting
Patterns are the focus for the week as we apply it to beadwork on the loom, small pouch weaving, and painting mandala patterns with acrylics.

Those of you who have participated in Alleyway Arts summer arts camps will see a new structure this summer. As always, I am flexible and glad to make adjustments to accommodate your interests and needs.

KIDS ARTS CAMPS
Each arts camp for younger children is a 3-day week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9AM to 12 noon. I am offering the morning arts camps to ages 5 to 10.
I understand how important the arts are for children’s development, and I know their art teachers in school do the best job possible to offer full and rich arts experiences while meeting the challenges of having large classes and limited class time. Each week of Alleyway’s summer camps, your child has 9 hours, about the equivalent of 1/3 of a school year of art. And these classes are small, never more than 8 students at a time, allowing for a lot of individual guidance and attention. Send a snack for a break time. There is a big yard to stretch and play, breaking up a long focused class.
Parents who would like to help are always welcome.

TEEN ARTS
Arts camps for teens start with age 11 and can go through the late teen years. Each is a 3-day week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 1 to 4PM. These 9-hour classes allow students deeper exposure and practice to really develop art skills and personal meaning. Content becomes more important at this age, therefore we include discussions on personal, social and universal meaning, and find ways to integrate these into the art making. Additional sessions can be scheduled for students who want to delve in even more. Take some classes with friends.

Alleyway Arts is an independent artist studio and teaching facility for adults and children of all abilities. We are located in Southwest Minneapolis and have been offering classes since 2008. Our classes are a focused blend, balancing artistic skill and sensitive emotional support.

I am Jennifer Kunin, founder and teacher at Alleyway Arts. I have a BFA in fine art from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a BS in Art Education from the U of M. I have been a practicing artist for over thirty years. I taught Art in the Minneapolis Public Schools for three years before I chose to go independent. I have since been on the MN State Arts Board Roster of artists, teaching arts residencies throughout MN for about 15 years and I have also taught classes at various art centers and studios.
After a few years teaching art classes at the Center for Performing Arts, I have moved the studio back into my little SW Minneapolis home. I love it. It’s perfect. We can work in the bright dining room, which opens to a large back yard. The creek is across the street. Downstairs is the papermaking and batik studio, although on beautiful days we do as much as possible outside. I have a potter’s wheel and kiln and tons of art supplies and inspiration everywhere. It’s a cozy creative home, conducive to artistic pursuits.

I am also now in a position to be able to afford to work with smaller intimate groups offering a lot of individual one-on-one attention and guidance.

My adult classes are about healing and expressing essence. I adapt to the needs of each participant to offer a balance of art instruction and depth of personal meaning and purpose.

For my children's classes, my intention is to keep their love of art alive even as they grow older. I understand how important the arts are for children’s development, and I know their art teachers in school do the best job possible to offer full and rich arts experiences while meeting the challenges of having large classes and very limited class time.

At Alleyway Arts I have structured a summer arts camp program with three hour sessions, giving students time to really delve into their process. This year I have 3 day weeks scheduled with morning camps for younger ages and afternoons for teens.

The rest of the summer days, I am available for private lessons and/or custom made classes. If you have a group interested in working on a particular kind of project, contact me and we can make it happen. It might be scouts, birthdays, family gatherings or just friends needing some structure for those long summer days.
