MN Boreal Forest Art

Ten Minnesota botanical artists are featured in Art on the Edge of the Boreal Forest: Alternative Futures for the trees, birds and insects, a science and art book including articles by Lee Frelich, PhD, director of The Center of Forest Ecology at the University and Gerald J. Niemi, PhD and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology, University of Minnesota-Duluth.
The book includes 83 renditions of original art. The Minnesota botanical artists include Vicki Barth, Wendy Brockman, Marj Davis, Kathleen Franzen, Nancy Gehrig, Debra Greenblatt, Julie Martinez, Mary Anne O'Malley, Kathy Reeves, and Bruce Wilson. Their work highlights specific aspects of 10 trees of the boreal forest identified by Frelich that are undergoing slow and silent but significant change due to disturbances caused by fire, invasive insects and stressful climate conditions.
Threatened birds of the boreal forest were identified by Niemi. Insects associated with the trees of the boreal forest were identified by Jana Albers, DNR Forest Health Specialist.

Monthly Artist Gathering: As five of the artists worked and talked, the window washers appeared outside the Bridgewater Loft Condominium where one of the artists lives. The artists gather once a month to work and talk about the Boreal Forest project.

Presenting "Art from the Edge of the Boreal Forest: Reflecting Biodiversity" in the MacRostie Gallery and new work by Bob Carls and Jerry Riach in the Minnesota Gallery. Artist talks at 6 pm. Sponsored by Children's Mental Health Services.

MacRostie Art Center (MAC) is located in downtown Grand Rapids at 405 1st Avenue NW directly across from Old Central School. About 3 hours north of the Twin Cities on Highway 169.

Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 am - 5 pm Sunday closed

A Fergus Falls exhibition focuses on trees of the Boreal Forest that are threatened by fires, pests and a changing climate.

A visit to the PWLC exhibit on June 18th included a charming tour of the prairie wetlands. The PWLC is open one Saturday a month in the summer. See photos at the top of this page.

The Prairie Wetlands Learning Center is the first residential environmental education center operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. PWLC sits on the Townsend Waterfowl Production Area, a 330 acre tract just outside Fergus Falls. The site includes native unbroken and restored prairie, over twenty wetlands and an oak savannah. Pen-ink drawings of plants related to trees in this project are exhibited PWLC.

The artwork for the Boreal Forest at Risk is now on exhibit through August 13 at the Kaddatz Gallery, A Center of the Arts and the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls.
