Look closely at the ordinary.

A bottle. A loaf of bread. Onions and garlic. Fruit arranged across a patterned cloth. In the hands of artist and architect Mark Mednikov, everyday objects become studies in form, light, color, and composition.

Mark Mednikov: Artist and Architect brings together thirty works from the Minnesota-based artist’s private studio, tracing a creative life shaped by both fine art and architecture. Trained at the Repin Art Institute in Leningrad, Mednikov brings an architect’s precision to his paintings while drawing inspiration from the traditions of European realism and the Old Masters.

After immigrating to the United States in 1979, Mednikov built a long architectural career in Minnesota before turning his attention fully to painting in recent years.

There’s still time to experience Mark Mednikov: Artist and Architect, on view in the Robert J. Brokop Gallery through September 20.

What can a poster tell us about a country?

Across the decades of the Soviet Union, posters sold products, promoted political ideals, rallied citizens during wartime, shaped public behavior, and communicated the priorities of a changing society.

Their visual language changed as well. From bold experiments in typography and composition to Socialist Realism, photography, illustration, and the striking graphic design of the late Soviet period.

In TMORA’s Main Gallery, the history of the Soviet Union unfolds through the lens of graphic design.

Last night at TMORA ✨

We welcomed visitors for a free evening to enjoy the galleries. TMORA’s Nitka Ensemble filled the Museum with songs rooted in ancient women’s communal traditions - music preserved across generations through oral tradition.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening of art, music, and community.

Imagine dinner after hours at the museum, seated in the galleries, surrounded by art, for an evening inspired by the work of acclaimed Ukrainian-born artist Elena Kalman.

On September 10, From Canvas to Table brings art and cuisine together for a one-night-only dining experience at The Museum of Russian Art. James Beard–nominated Chef Jamie Malone and Paris Dining Club have created a beautiful multi-course menu inspired by Kalman’s exhibition Catastrophe and What Survives and its interplay of architecture and nature.

Crab vol-au-vent. Pumpkin bisque with brown butter. Roast salmon with sweet corn and potato pavé. 72-hour Wagyu short rib with pomegranate jus. Late-summer plum frangipane tart.

As evening falls and the museum closes to the public, the galleries become the dining room…an intimate setting for exceptional food, wine, music, art, and conversation with Elena Kalman.

Tomorrow night, the gallery becomes part of the conversation!

TMORA is excited to host Bienvenidos Dystopia, bringing nine Twin Cities artists and musicians together for an evening of art, music, performance, ideas, dark humor and, eventually, dancing.

Taking place inside TMORA’s Posters of the Soviet Era, Bienvenidos Dystopia puts contemporary artists in conversation with an exhibition examining political power, propaganda, ideology, and the ways governments sought to shape public life. Timely.

Through a series of rapid-fire presentations, artists will turn their attention to our own uncertain moment - technology, climate, media, democracy, and the ways we make sense of a world that can sometimes feel increasingly dystopian.

As MPR News described it, it’s a “dance party-variety show-salon mashup.” Come for the art and ideas. Stay for the conversation. And after all that dystopia, we dance.
