Get Lit: A Spotlight on Minnesota Artists
Presented by Douglas Flanders & Associates

Today, we’re getting lit with Minneapolis artist Mike Welton.

“Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.”
— Five Man Electrical Band

Stop. Push. Pull. Do Not Enter.
Signs do a lot. They direct, describe, identify, change, instruct, attract, promote, and label.

They’re an essential part of how we communicate and make sense of the world. Conventional signs—road signs, map markings, company logos—have collectively agreed upon meanings. Non-conventional signs—graffiti, abstract art, personal hand signals (no, not that one... okay, maybe that one)—don’t always play by the same rules.

But signs do more than tell you to push when you insist on pulling. They tell stories, our stories. The stories of the people, places, and communities they represent. Whether it’s a painting of a vintage storefront sign or graffiti scrawled across a boxcar, Welton’s “signs” connect with us on a personal level: we have worn the sign, hung the sign, assigned the sign. In one way or another, we have been shaped by its message.

Welton paints the world he lives in, the places he moves through, the moments he witnesses. Using bold color, historical and contemporary imagery, and photorealistic and abstract styles, he captures the atmosphere of a constantly changing urban environment while nodding to the foundation from which it evolves.

Welton reminds us that signs aren’t just markers or messages, they’re memory keepers. They may fade, get painted over, or torn down, but their stories, for better or worse, stick around. So come and see a few at Flanders.

Get Lit: A Spotlight on Minnesota Artists
Presented by Douglas Flanders & Associates

Today we are getting lit with Hopkins based artist Jim Meyer.

Reminiscent of vintage U.S. National Park posters, Meyer’s woodblock prints, paintings, and illustrations remind us that the American landscape isn’t just a backdrop for selfies; it’s what shaped our history, culture, and identity. We should be its selfie background.

It’s Meyer’s woodblock printing, in particular, that captures the diversity, majesty, and awe-inspiring beauty of our land. The medium fits the message: it uses natural wood, demands manual labor, and relies on time, patience, and authenticity over tech and shortcuts.

Woodblock printing is a relief process. A design is carved into wood, ink rolled on, paper pressed down, and an image transferred.

Sounds simple. It’s not.

It’s labor-intensive, technically demanding, and deeply tactile. But the results speak for themselves. With bold color, simplified shapes, and graphic outlines, Meyer gives us a world of isolated forest cabins, clifftop lighthouses, northern lights, and frozen waterfalls; his way of reminding us that the real world is still the best filter there is.

Take a road trip without hitting the road. See the work of Jim Meyer at and https://www.woodblockart.com/.

Get Lit: A Spotlight on Minnesota Artists
Presented by Douglas Flanders & Associates

Today we are getting lit with Minnesota artists who have turned fall into an art form.

A 2021 survey by YouGov found that fall is Minnesota’s favorite season despite the risk of October blizzards and pumpkin spice everything. And these artists show us why, in works that capture the season’s beauty, splendor, and melancholy in ways as unique and diverse as the state itself.

Scott Lloyd Anderson, Donna Bruni, Michelle Combs, Don Holzschuh, Mary Lingen, Robert Matheson, and Kim Matthews show us that fall isn’t just a season, it's a state of mind.

So forget leaf-peeping and peep some art instead!
