“For me, it’s political to make an artwork about peace and beauty. I wanted people, especially Black people, to see the beauty. People need beauty.” —Suzanne Jackson

In this monumental triptych, painter Suzanne Jackson set out to make a statement about Black beauty and love from the perspective of a Black woman. Birds, plants, and figures created here using loose washes of acrylic paint were motifs central to the artist’s work at the time.

Experience the work on view in "Suzanne Jackson: What Is Love." Gallery admission is free during Free Thursday Nights and Free First Saturdays.

A dance work, installation, and community engagement project in one.

We recently had the honor of sharing "A:gajë:gwah dësa’nigöëwë:nye:’ (i hope it will stir your mind)," created by lead artist Rosy Simas (Seneca Nation of Indians, Heron clan). It's a work in which every stitch of the set, movement, and sound is imbued with a peacemaking state of being.

Experience the related exhibition by the same name on view through July 5. Gallery admission is free every Thursday night, the First Saturday of the month, and always free for citizens and members of Tribal Nations.

Language, sound, and image meet in Christine Sun Kim’s practice. Through ASL, written English, musical notation, and spatial forms, she examines the political dimensions of sound.

In an interview with the Walker Reader published alongside her current exhibition "All Day All Night," Kim reflected on communication across cultures and the ways composition and collaboration shape her work and thinking.

The LA Rebellion reshaped independent filmmaking through work attuned to the urgent social and political landscape of Los Angeles. Led by artists emerging from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television between the 1960s and 1980s, the movement continues to influence the aesthetic and political possibilities of Black cinema today.

Our new six-part film series features landmark and rarely screened works, including new 4K restorations of Zeinabu irene Davis’s "Compensation," Charles Burnett’s "Killer of Sheep" and a 16mm preservation print of Larry Clark's "Passing Through."

What does American Sign Language look like as a sculpture?

In ASL, waving your palm downward within someone's field of vision attracts attention to yourself while pointing draws attention to something else. The kinetic sculpture "ATTENTION" materializes these signs. As the arms constantly inflate and deflate, a rock at the center becomes a stand-in for the body, suggesting the wear and tear of our attention economy.

Experience the work on view in Christine Sun Kim, “All Day All Night.” Gallery admission is free every Thursday night and the first Saturday of the month.

"There are moments when I tell myself to breathe. Becoming free and loose in the painting, flowing between shapes of color and texture. I have become a navigator in time." —Arlene Burke-Morgan

The local artist is known for her sense of movement on the canvas and meditative practice. In "Wings of Faith," you're invited to follow where Burke-Morgan leads, traveling between what she described as “circles of light.”

Experience the work on view in "This Must Be the Place: Inside the Walker’s Collection." Gallery admission is free every Thursday night and the first Saturday of the month.

What does a L’Rain performance feel like?

Before she takes the stage at the Walker, Taja Cheek offers a glimpse into the experience she’s building for audiences. With her band, she’ll perform and record live as an experiment unfolding before them. It’s part concert, part video work, and a rare opportunity to witness a live album take shape. The performance creates a dreamlike atmosphere where you’re invited to expect the unexpected, feel deeply, and have fun together.

A few tickets remain! Experience L’Rain live at the Walker this Saturday.

Yves Klein, a self-identified “painter of space,” was born on this day in 1928. During his brief yet influential career, Klein pursued immaterial spirituality through pure color. His defining series of monochromes features an ultramarine blue of his own invention, International Klein Blue.
