Retired backcountry CFI extraordinaire Jeanne MacPherson and Kristi Dunks, Deputy Director for Regional Ops NTSB. Kristi is an aircraft owner, CFI and aviation mechanic. They are at the Montana Aviation Conference in Missoula and that's the DC-3 that once belonged to Johnson Flying Service, now dubbed "Miss Montana," behind them.

Happy New Year from the Museum of Mountain Flying. We had a wonderful crazy busy year and have a lot to be thankful for. We would like to celebrate our appreciation for your continued and valued support in Missoula, Friday January, 24th at 5pm at the downtown Berkshire Hathaway offices, where we will have appetizers and beverages and hold our annual end of year meeting of the members.

There are many exciting things happening this month and we had an extremely busy December with the Holidays, Red Sleighs event and conflicts of schedules the decision was made by the board to hold this year end event in the month of January so all could attend.

Our most exciting announcement is we are currently in Brownsville, Texas working on the newest aircraft acquisition for the Musuem. A 1944, Douglass A-26 invader used as a fire bomber and highlighted in the movie Always, Filmed in Libby Montana and operated by the Lynch family in Billings. This is an iconic Montana aircraft that through one amazing individual donation we have been able to acquire the majority of funding to purchase the aircraft.

A maintenance team has volunteered to come to Texas and work on making the aircraft airworthy through the New Year and ready for flying to Montana. Hopefully all goes well! We have an anticipated date to bring it back home in April.

We will send more out about the aircraft and it’s history in the upcoming Musuem newsletter the Backcountry Flyer.

Once again thank you for all of your support and we look forward to more exciting news and great aviation times for 2025

God Bless and Happy New Year.

The Museum of Mountain Flying and Fishing Camp took to the Blackfoot River to practice using fly rods. Thank you to Westslope Chapter Trout Unlimited for providing expertise and guidance to our campers. A special thank you to Gary Matson for the fly over and reenactment of Charles Lindergh's flight over Lindergh Lake and to Paws Up for giving us fishing access.

You don’t want to miss this wonderful tribute to the fallen! August 5th 1949. Gone but not forgotten.

Join us next Monday, August 5, on the north side of the Montana State Capitol for the Mann Gulch 75th anniversary memorial tribute.

Wreaths dedicated to the fire guard and twelve smokejumpers who lost their lives in the fire will be on display. The keynote address will be given by journalist and author John N. Maclean, the son of Norman Maclean who wrote Young Men and Fire. Other speakers will include Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, the president of the National Smokejumper Association and members of the UDSA Forest Service leadership. Miss Montana, the C-47 cargo plane that carried the smokejumpers into Mann Gulch, will fly over the ceremony, weather and FAA clearance permitting.

Next Monday’s address begins at 5:15 p.m. Attendees should park in the nearby Safeway parking lot and take the Last Chance Tour Train as a free public transport to the Capitol. The train will make trips between Safeway parking lot and the north side of the Capitol between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and bring people back to the Safeway lot following the ceremony at 6:05 p.m.
