Cordell Glaus

Pavilion No. 6 at the Lions Park was named for Cordell Glaus, who was born in 1927. After serving in the U.S. Army, Cordell attended Kent State University and became a member of Epsilon Pi Tau, the first Industrial Arts professional fraternity in the state of Ohio. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in Industrial Arts, Cordell was the first of two persons in Ohio to receive the Ohio Architect License in 1953. Mr. Glaus served as president of the Mogadore Lions Club from 1965 to 1966.

After working with an engineering and architecture firm in Akron for eight years, Cordell and other colleagues formed the architectural and engineering firm of Glaus, Pyle, and DeHaven. Glaus’s firm was instrumental in designing the plans for the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church on Route 532. Other buildings designed by his firm include the First Baptist Church of Akron, the Hoover corporate headquarters in North Canton, and several area high school buildings. Mr. Glaus was also president of the American Institute of Architects / Akron in 1971.

Retiring from the firm after 26 years, Cordell formed a company with his sons Kent and Gary. Portage Hills Vineyards was the result of Cordell’s interest in viticulture and enology. The vineyard was open until 2002.

Besides his interest in wine cultivation, Cordell enjoyed bicycling, music, and painting. He was very active in the United Methodist Church in Mogadore, where he was a member for 55 years. Besides his two sons Kent and Gary, Cordell and Lois, who he married in 1953, had a daughter Diane. After Lois passed away, Cordell married Henrietta and became stepfather to Bruce.
