Portrait of Marie Stevens, Oil on canvas by Isabel Cartright.
Marie and her husband Dan Stevens (Fog Keeper 1890-1902, Lighthouse Keeper 1902-1919) were important figures in the artistic history of Monhegan Island. They were prominent members of the community during the period when the Monhegan Art Colony was established, and became friends with many of the artists who were working and living on the island. Numerous photos and reports attest to the mutual regard between the Stevenses and resident artists. And the Stevens’ interest was not only in the individual artists, but also in their art: Dan and Marie are the first known art collectors on Monhegan.

Whitehead, Monhegan, oil on panel by Rockwell Kent circa 1950. Kent studied painting with with Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. In 1905 he visited Monhegan, the first of Henri’s students to go for an extended stay after Henri had visited in 1903. Kent spent much of each year on Monhegan from 1905 until 1910. He built a house for himself in 1907, and in 1910 he built a studio for himself where he had a summer art school that year. Kent left Monhegan after the summer of 1910, returned briefly in 1917 and 1947 and then bought back his house in 1948. He spent time painting on the island each year until 1953. The studio he build later was used by artists Alice Kent Stoddard and James Fitzgerald and is now part of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios and can be visited during the summer months. .hahs
