Just finishing off this past mat job with a thin gold leafed frame. This was an order where the client had me mount the photos and build the mat boarder first. They would return at a later date to select the frame. At a glance this looks like a simple mat job, but under close inspection you will find some unexpected details that I believe makes it special.

What do you think so far?

This is a custom picture frame design that I'm working on for a client that draws inspiration from pagoda architecture.

Below you will see some messy hand sketching where I work out all the little details before drawing in CAD. This design will go to the client for final design approval and then to the artisan frame maker for quoting and fabrication.

I'm considering taking on a new shadowbox framing project, that would let me explore custom options outside the picture framing industry.

If you have art/objects that need to be displayed in a shadowbox and really want something unique, we should talk.

Sometimes traditional framing products are limiting, and a custom fabricated solution is necessary to really enhance the art/objects, but very few frame shops are willing to explore those options because its out of their comfort zone.

I'd really like to do something wild.

I would offer free CAD service. I'm working with Solidworks 2019. This would really open up the design options and allow us to do these things listed below, and possibly more. This also means it will take a lot more time!

Fabrication Options:

- Cut and/or bend sheet metal (Frame/background or both).
- Laser cut - acrylic (any color), carbon fiber
- Custom machining of 3D parts (Ex: Custom brackets, etc).

Finish Options:

- Custom paint, powder coating, translucent color anodizing (on any fabricated aluminum components), Chrome plating

I would be subcontracting out all the fabrication, paint, plating, etc, with companies that have their own lead-times, and then after I get all parts, I have to put everything together, so depending on complexity expect extended lead-times.

The little girl in photo is my client. Wonderful vintage multiple exposure b&w hand-colored photograph! Framing components are comprised of a double hand-wrapped linen mat with silver leafed wood fillet attached to lip of mat. Optically coated museum acrylic was used for optimal clarify, UV protection, and impact resistance. Frame is a vintagesque style with embossed beaded detail and faux finish.
