Casa del Herrero

Casa del Herrero Casa del Herrero, by architect George Washington Smith, is noted as one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in America. Underhill.

When visitors come to Casa del Herrero, or the “House of the Blacksmith,” they are transported back to Montecito in the 1920s and 1930s – the heyday of the original owner George Fox Steedman. Designed by George Washington Smith, the Casa is one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in America. It is included on the National Register of Historic Places, and maintains Natio

nal Historic Landmark status in part due to its Moorish-style gardens created by Ralph Stevens, Lockwood de Forest, and Francis T. Today, the 11-acre estate functions as a nonprofit organization with the goal of preserving the house and grounds, as well as the Steedman family’s collection of fifteenth and sixteenth-century fine and decorative art objects from the “Golden Age” of Spain, books, sketchbooks, drawings, and horticultural records. Casa del Herrero is preserved and stewarded for the benefit of the community, and can be visited with advance reservations.

Every week, volunteers at the Casa work on projects in the garden, lead visitors on tours, and even create floral arrangements to decorate the house.

Thank you to our incredible volunteers for sharing your time and your knowledge at the Casa, and for making it possible to share this beautiful space with the public.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the restoration of the Casa’s South Exedra!

The restoration of the South Exedra— as well as the other tile fountains, the greenhouse complex, and pump house— is possible thanks to our collaboration with and a grant through the Save America’s Treasures program.

The Save America’s Treasures grant is a matching grant, which means that this work has been made possible by the generous contributions of our supporters. If you would like to contribute as we move into the next phase of the project, please visit the link in our bio.

⚠️Restoration in progress⚠️

While looking out from the Arizona Garden, Casa del Herrero’s visitors may have noticed an excedra at the southern boundary of the property. Thanks to the funds from our Save America’s Treasures grant, restoration work has revived this beautiful space. Tile conservator Susie Anderson has been painstakingly cleaning each historic ceramic tile. We look forward to sharing more updates on the excedra and other projects at the Casa.
