Day 6 of the Architects of Change Summer Camp was all about growth, sustainability, and exploring new opportunities! 🌱✨

Our campers started the day at Fresh Garden Market, where they learned about environmental stewardship, healthy food systems, and the importance of sustainability in our communities. We then visited the Montgomery Interpretive Center to dive deeper into the rich history and stories that have shaped our region.

To wrap up the day, campers toured Alabama State University, getting a firsthand look at college life, academic opportunities, and what their future could hold. From learning about the environment to exploring higher education, today was filled with inspiration, discovery, and meaningful experiences. πŸ’›πŸπŸŽ“

Week 2 of the Architects of Change Summer Camp is off to an amazing start! πŸŽ‰ Today, our campers explored the rich history of Centennial Hill and learned more about the people and places that helped shape our community.

We were also inspired by three outstanding young entrepreneurs and leaders. Khye Cunningham of Khye’s Creations shared his entrepreneurial journey and even treated everyone to some delicious cookies πŸͺ. Kristopher Gardner spoke about youth advocacy, civic engagement, and the important role young people play in addressing issues within our city. Railyn Holt of A Rai of Sunshine encouraged campers to pursue their passions and brought a homemade pound cake that was a huge hit! 🍰

Thank you to our incredible guest speakers for pouring into the next generation of changemakers. We can’t wait to see what the rest of Week 2 has in store! ✨

in 1921, the two-day Tulsa Race Massacre began.

A white mob attacked the predominantly Black Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, destroying homes, businesses and entire city blocks of what was known as β€œBlack Wall Street.”

As many as 300 people were killed, thousands were left homeless, and generations of Black wealth and opportunity were erased.

The Tulsa Race Massacre remains one of the deadliest acts of racial violence in U.S. history and a reminder of the lasting impact of white supremacist violence.

Wrapping up an incredible first week of the Architects of Change Summer Camp with a meaningful visit to the Freedom Rides Museum ✊🏽🚌✨ Campers had the opportunity to learn about the brave individuals who challenged segregation and changed the course of history through the Freedom Rides movement. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of courage, activism, and standing up for justice. β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’š

To bring history to life, campers also participated in our very own Green Book activity πŸ“–πŸ›£οΈ, exploring what travel looked like for African Americans during the Jim Crow era and learning how communities created safe spaces during difficult times. This week has been full of learning, leadership, reflection, and unforgettable experiences πŸŒŸπŸ™ŒπŸ½ β€” and we’re just getting started.

Day 2 & 3 of the Architects of Change Summer Camp were filled with powerful lessons, meaningful conversations, and unforgettable experiences! ✨

On Day 2, our campers visited the Civil Rights Memorial Center, the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and the historic Holt Street Baptist Church. Throughout the day, students learned more about the Civil Rights Movement, the importance of civic engagement, and the courageous individuals whose actions helped shape history. These visits encouraged campers to reflect on the power of unity, leadership, and using their voices to create change in their own communities.

Day 3 took us on an exciting trip to Tuskegee, Alabama, where campers toured Tuskegee University and explored the rich legacy of excellence, innovation, and perseverance connected to the institution. Students also learned about the groundbreaking work of George Washington Carver at the George Washington Carver Museum and were inspired by the bravery and accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Each day continues to inspire our campers to become informed leaders, engaged citizens, and future changemakers. From Montgomery to Tuskegee, they are learning that history is not just something we study β€” it’s something they have the power to shape. β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’š

Day 2 of summer camp is done! We had an educational day learning about Alabama’s history and Montgomery as the birthplace of the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Not only did we tour our museum, but we also explored the Civil Rights Memorial, Alabama Department of Archives and History, and Holt Street Baptist Church Museum. A huge thank you goes out to our community partners who are always willing to collaborate and who play a vital role in educating students on this history and the power of communities working together!

Today, our campers kicked things off with fun icebreakers, powerful conversations about conflict resolution, lessons on environmental rights, and learning what it means to be an engaged civil citizen. 🌎✨

A special thank you to ZiZi’s Bee Company and Sam Yu for partnering with us and sharing valuable knowledge about the environment and the important role we all play in protecting it. πŸπŸ’š
