A few end of school year field trips are scheduled for the Chimney Point State Historic Site, Addison, VT. Here the site interpreters are setting up the French material culture display for a school visit this morning. Monsieur Michael talked with the elementary students about the fur trade, trapping, how the French and Native peoples traded with each other, the types of objects they carried and needed to survive, and more. The students also visited the museum, handled ancient stone tools, and learned how to use the atlatl (ancient spear thrower). A beautiful day for a school outing.

The Vermont State Historic Sites salute those who served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice on this 2026 Memorial Day. The Hubbardton Battlefield, Bennington Battle Monument, President Calvin Coolidge, and Mount Independence State Historic Sites honor Memorial Day every day. July 7, 1777, monument at the Hubbardton Battlefield, 1891 monument to honor the Battle of Bennington and saving the American storehouse at Bennington, the World War 1 memorial on the green in the center of Plymouth Notch, and three monuments at Mount Independence (SAR, DAR, and Colonial Dames).

Today was the first ever "Patriots of Mount Independence Day" at the Mount Independence State Historic Site (Orwell, VT)--a great way to kick off the Mount's 250th year. Eight schools and over 230 students from the area descended to enjoy seven stations run by longtime Revolutionary War reenactor friends and our staff experts, to vist the museum, to play period games, and to walk the trails. They learned about medicine on the Mount, the life of chaplains at the time, food, the British occupation in 1777, what material items soldiers had and needed to be here, writing letters home, and laying out a brigade. Other reenactor friends talked with students as they went from one station to the next and in front of the museum. Thanks to Mike to advocating for the idea, to Tobi who carried it out with great aplomb, and for the participation of all the staff at the western sites (Mount Independence, Hubbardton Battlefield, and Chimney Point).
