Susquehanna County Historical Society

Susquehanna County Historical Society The Susquehanna County Historical Society formed in 1890 to collect and preserve historical records and artifacts of the county.

The Susquehanna County Historical Society, established in 1890, offers an extensive museum collection, as well as a genealogy and local history research library. By 1907, the Society and the local public library joined as the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association to build a permanent building which, until 2017, housed both the historical society and the public library.

Both the Library and Historical Society ran out of room in the building, so the Library had a new building erected and moved, while the Historical Society remains in the building originally constructed in 1907. The Society offers a Museum with permanent and temporary exhibits of portrait and landscape paintings, furnishings, textiles, Native American artifacts, and medical, military, and surveying items, all free for the public to view. Our Research Library is the primary resource for Susquehanna County history and genealogical material on Susquehanna County families. Included are family files, census records, cemetery records, local newspapers, wills, deeds, tax records, marriage licenses, manuscripts, published genealogies, and local, New England, Pennsylvania, and New York histories. For non members there is a fee of $10 to come in for the day to do research.

A good time as had by all! That's the sentiment surrounding the Susquehanna County Historical Society Gala last night in Montrose. There was great food from Darrow's catering, music generously provided by the one and only Mama Bullmoose, wine and beer graciously served by Ali Teel, a fun atmosphere and wonderful fellowship. The setting was the beautiful Relic, its use likewise generously provided to us.

We have many folks to thank for the success of the evening: Hometown Finds, Robilotti Fine Jeweler’s, All in a Basket, St. Joe’s Winery, Carol Patrick, the Susquehanna County Promotion and Tourism Bureau, and Vinnie Quattrocchi not to mention Ginny Lewis and Peg Miller. You are all the best!

The gala was held to benefit the window restoration project of the Historical Society.

The day has finally arrived! The crew from Owens Historic Preservation Services arrived this morning and has begun removing the windows and sill coverings from the back of the building. The openings will be covered while their team restores items offsite. We can't wait to see the final results!

Thanks again to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission for their generous $100,000 matching grant to help make this possible! And thank you to our generous donors who are helping us get closer to our match goal!

Some folks have had some questions about our window restoration project. So here are a few FAQ's-

The project is funded in part by a Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission (PHMC) Keystone Construction Grant which provided half of the $200,000 cost for which we are very grateful!

Windows will be restored- not replaced! This will help us protect the collection by keeping out moisture and insects and make heating the building more efficient.

We are starting on the back of the building. The front isn't as pretty as it could be right now, but it will have its day soon. This will be a multiphase project througout the summer.

Our construction company works on historic window restoration and not other construction work so they are experts in the field.
