Comstock House 2024 Tour Season

Friday & Saturday, May 31 to September 28

Tours start on the hour from 10 - 3 Hill build a railroad system in the Red River Valley.

Solomon Comstock established the First National Bank and Moorhead State University and helped James J. Ada Comstock, one of three children reared in the home, became the first dean of women at the University of Minnesota and later president of Radcliffe College.

Laura May Baldwin was born May 10, 1864, in Minneapolis, MN. Her father passed away when she was only a year old. By age six her mother had re-married and moved to Rockford, MN. She married Frederick Wesely Porritt in Fargo, ND on May 14, 1891.

"Alice Angell, later Mrs. Charles Lamb"

Alice Angell Lamb was born to Nancy Ball Angell (Aunt Nannie, Sarah's sister) and Clark Lewis Angell Sr. on December 7, 1865. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1882 and from the St. Cloud Normal School (a teacher's college) by 1886.

"Mrs. S.G. Roberts"

After her first husband's passing, Jennie married Samuel Gilman (S.G.) Roberts. We don't know exactly how many children they had. However, we do know that they had a son, Frank Augustus Roberts, who passed away at the age of three. In 1878 their daughter Ruth Roberts was born. Jennie passed away at the age of 69 in 1911. A quote from her obituary reads, "There was probably no woman in the city of Fargo who exerted greater influence for good than she."

"Mrs. Angell - "Aunt Nannie" Mother's youngest sister"

Nancy Ball Angell is the youngest daughter of Joseph and Sarah Ball. She was born in February of 1847 in Edwardsburg, Ontario, Canada. By 1950 she and the family arrived in Minnesota. She was married to Clark Lewis Angell Sr. on July 3rd, 1864. They had five children, and sadly she outlived three of those sons. She passed away in 1929 at 82 and was laid to rest in Litchfield, MN.

Joseph Ball was born in 1805 in England. He married Sarah Hallet Ball in 1822. By September 1841 they were in Ontario, Canada. The family moved around the US starting around 1850 and by the time of his passing in 1890, he was located in Fargo, ND.

Ruth Roberts Haggart was born on December 2nd, 1878 in Fargo, ND. She graduated from Fargo Public Schools in 1898. In November of 1900, she married Gilbert Wood Haggart. She belonged to the ND Votes for Women League.

Jennie Ball Roberts was born on September 16th, 1841 in Canada. She married George Peck Baldwin in August of 1862. They had one daughter, Laura May Baldwin. Sadly, George passed away in 1865, just short of three years after their marriage.

This October, take a journey through the hidden wonders of the Comstock House, all under the enchanting glow of flashlights.

As the sun sets, the Comstock House transforms into a captivating spectacle. During this unique after-dark tour, we'll plunge the house into darkness, making way for an exclusive adventure that unveils the essence of its artifacts and architectural marvels like never before. Our guides will illuminate various corners of the house, enabling you to appreciate its beauty and history from a whole new perspective.

You'll have access to parts of the house that are typically off-limits to the public, adding an element of excitement and discovery to the experience.

The Nooks & Crannies Flashlight Tour is approximately 90-minutes long and starts promtly at 7:30 pm. To ensure the comfort and safety of our guests, each tour is limited to 10 guests.

We kindly request all participants to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour, as we will provide vital safety information to ensure your comfort throughout the tour. Tickets on sale now!

Samuel Gilman Roberts was born on March 10th, 1843 in Maine. According to the NDSU archives he was in Maine, then served in the Civil War, and after came to Minneapolis to study Law. According to the Fargo History Project, he arrived in Cass County in January of 1872, one of the first settlers.
