Museum News!

“Skully”, a skull belonging to a giant ground sloth, is officially part of the Survey’s collection. “Skully” is similar to our beloved state fossil, “Jeff”, a Megalonyx jeffersoni.

The donation of “Skully" allows for a rare opportunity for scientific research to learn more about the past presence of giant ground sloths in West Virginia.
We would like to thank the W**d family for their generosity and willingness to donate this specimen.

Visit “Skully” and “Jeff” Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 4:30 pm at our free museum!

Congratulations to our 2026 Draw Jeff Contest Winners!

Thank you to all of our participants, we love seeing all the variations of our beloved WV state fossil, “Jeff”!

“Jeff” is a giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii), named after Thomas Jefferson, who first described the bones as a “great claw".

Winners will be contacted by a Survey staff member and all participants will receive a letter and sticker in the mail.

*As a note, we unfortunately did not receive any submissions from the 5th-8th graders this year.*

Happy Valentine’s Day!
We love dinosaurs as much as the next Geological Survey but…we also love reptiles!

Some of the best Dimetrodon tracks were found in Ritchie Co., WV. These, nearly 290-million-year-old tracks, are on display at our free museum.

The Dimetrodon is commonly mistaken for a dinosaur when it’s actually a reptile. A simple way to verify this is by examining the shape of the arms. Reptilian arms stick out a bit, and the joints aren’t stacked on top of each other like dinosaurs.

The Survey’s museum is free and open to the public during our regular business hours (M-F, 8am-4pm).
